I'm getting a soft grinding noise on my hp g4 laptop (though it got louder this morning) and have heard I should try to blow the dust out of my unit; I have read that I can get compressed air and blow it into the vents on the bottom (which I'd rather do than open it up, I'm not experienced with opening it up); but I'm worried that by blowing compressed air INTO the vents I'm just moving the dust around the inside of the computer. Am I supposed to blow the compressed air into the vents - will that blow the dust out of the laptop? I want to make sure by blowing the air into the vents I'm not making the problem worse. Thanks for any help.

Solution
Hi, when you blow the compressed air into the vent, hold the fan with something, a toothpick will do, because you will damage the fan if it spins too fast. The enclosure of the fan is design to redirect the air to the outside of the laptop, no dust goes inside the laptop from the fan enclosure.

thanks for the help - but if I have the computer turned off when I blow the compressed air in, do I have to worry about the fan spinning (putting a toothpick in)? - in other words, with the laptop off (maybe I should remove the battery?) I'll blow air into all the vents - is that right? Truth is, I'm not even sure where the fan is! Thanks again.

Yes, is better to take out the battery and unplug the adapter, when you put the laptop upside down, the battery compartment away from you. In the right corner beside the battery, you have the intake vent for the fan, on the right side of the laptop you have the outtake vent. If you look into the vent, maybe you will see the fan, the toothpick is only to stop the fan from spinning. You blow the air in the vent, and from the side of the laptop the air goes out.
