Hi I really need some advice. I recently added a new sound card (ASUS DGX XONAR) almost a week ago now, it worked great but today my computer selectively froze up on the log in screen (Windows 8.1 where you enter the password) I couldn't type anything but my mouse still worked and I could even highlight the power and restart button but had to hold down the physical power button to turn of the PC. I restarted a few times and it worked well for a few minutes each time then would randomly stop responding. I was able to restart in safemode and ran malwarebytes which found a suspicious file in my recycle bin and was quarantined. I'm a amateur with computer (this is my first build and its a little less then a year old, it's ran great till now) I'm considering refreshing windows but I could really use some solid advice on what else I should do or be looking at doing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Update 1: I removed the sound card but windows still becomes unresponsive, sometime within minutes and sometimes immediately.

Update 2: It seems to crash much faster now to the point of not working outside of safe mode and even getting to safe mode has been unreliable. I tried a system restore and nothing has improved. I really need help. If I'm asking in the wrong place or even the wrong site please direct me to a site that might be more in line with my needs. Thanks

It sounds like the driver for this sound card is conflicting heavily with windows 8.1. Since use of your computer is limited at this time, try finding another way to access the internet; ie. laptop or something, as long as you can connect a usb. Unfortunately Asus drivers are notoriously bad for xonar cards. After some digging I managed to find you the latest driver for your sound card.

Here is a direct link to the driver. Download it and install in safe mode.... ge.tt/api/1/files/2B5mAS22/3/blob?download

If it doesn't link just copy and paste into address bar. These drivers are for windows 8.1 and this is the latest from 10/28/14.

Site will full information on drivers is http://maxedtech.com/asus-xonar-unified-drivers/

Wish you luck man.

Its sounding like your operating system is currupt. A check disk may fix your problem but could be hard to get it started. Since win8.1 boots really fast, the traditional mash f8 for extra options may bug out. What ya need to do is get to a command prompt.

So first get back into safe mode for your computer. Then in the search box type "msconfig" without the quotes. This should open a window for you with 5 tabs, go to boot tab. Select windows 8.1 and under boot options check safe boot with active directory; apply and restart your computer. This should hopefully get you to the repair screen, I've never tried this method of getting there in win8.1, but hopefully it gets you there. One you're there, go through the options till you see an option for command prompt. Open that and then type...

chkdsk /f

This will run a full check disk to find and fix errors.
Hopefully this fixes your problem. If it doesn't, you might have to reinstall windows. Hopefully you won't.

Good luck.

I ran chkdsk /f and watched it jump from 60% complete to 100% then reboot and start windows normally, sadly that didn't seem to help but thank you for your help anyway.
