Computer and GPU work, but fan doesn't?

I just recently finished building my PC, and it works well. I'm using right now. The thing is, the GPU fan isn't running, and when I run a simple game like stickfight, it only gets about 5 frames per second. The odd/scary thing is, when I tried to unplug my GPU from the power cable, the fan started working, so I thought "huh, I guess I'll try running a game again." I did and it ran stickfight no problem-with no power to the GPU. I'm worried that I may have broken it. Advice?

EVGA GeForce Gtx 1060 3GB SC

Stick fight is more then likely a CPU powered game rather then GPU so its not the best benchmark. I have a feeling unplugging the power from the GPU simply disabled the card. Have you installed the latest drivers for the card? Also if the PSU has another PCIe power cable try that. Also maybe try and disable the integrated graphics.

When I went onto nvidia's site (http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=en-us), the only driver I could download with my search of my gpu gave me a gaming optimized driver, which I'm downloading now. I also shamefully admit that I have no clue how to disable the integrated graphics. Also I might be completely wrong but I don't think unplugging the gpu disabled it because it started running the fan.

Yeah that's the one I'm downloading now. I also just saw on other forums that it's possible my GPU fan isn't running because I'm not gaming right now. That still doesn't explain why it would start after I unplug it though.
