Hello everyone, I recently upgraded my computer and im having some issues with a certain game : World of warcraft, and was hoping someone here might have a answer.

Whenever i try to run the game in DirectX11 my computer instantly reboot - the moment i run the .exe file, if I change settings to run it in DirectX9 its no problems at all.
This issue only occurs when playing world of warcraft.

After alot of google searching i found alot of people having similar issues as I do.

The most helpful one was to "Down-clock" my graphic card using the MSI Afterburner tool, i down-clocked my "Core" by 100Mhz and Memory by 70Mhz, after doing this I can now play in DirectX11 without any issues it seems.

Im wondering what can cause this? And is it safe to keep it "Down clocked" like this? I dont want any of my new parts to get fried because with my lack of knowledge on computer thinks everything is fine.
If its safe to keep it like this i guess its not a big change for the ingame graphics and not worth putting alot of time and effort in fixing, for the last 100Mhz.

Here are my computer speccs aswell, with temperatures. Let me know if i need to provide more.

CPU
Intel Core i7 870 @ 2.93GHz 38 °C
Lynnfield 45nm Technology - Almost 5 years old.

RAM
16,0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 668MHz (9-9-9-24) - NEW

Motherboard
ASUSTeK Computer INC. P7P55D-E LX (LGA1156) 36 °C - Almost 5 years old.

Graphics
SyncMaster (1920x1080@60Hz)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (MSI) 46 °C - New

Storage
223GB KINGSTON SV300S37A240G ATA Device (SSD) 21 °C - NEW
931GB Seagate ST31000528AS ATA Device (SATA) 26 °C - Almost 5 years old.

Optical Drives
ATAPI iHAS124 Y ATA Device

Audio
NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (Wave Extensible) (WDM)

Corsair TX 650W PSU
ATX 12V V2.2, 80 Plus, Standard. 2x 6+2-pin PCIe, - Almost 5 years old.

Operating System
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit - New.

All temperatures are WITH World of warcraft up running on Ultra settings and DirectX11.

Hopefully someone out there have some answers for me, thanks for your time reading my post.

Edit: My friend who built it ran a stress test on the computer and said everything was fine, all drivers should be up to date aswell.

All things being considered (and btw great job on providing details) this looks like a driver issue.

Under no circumstances should higher clocks on your graphics card reset your computer unless if you were using a too weak PSU (and your PSU is excellent quality, although a bit old at this point, but still), your card is overheating (not - 46C is nothing, card can run at twice as higher temp) or if it is downright defective (if all other games work fine, it is not).

By downclocking, you are actually not risking anything. Lower GPU clocks cannot hurt your card, only your graphical performance (and very little at that). I would completely ignore this issue - keep using your card slightly downclocked, you are not risking anything and the game works. One day when Nvidia fixes the drivers, you will likely be able to use full speed.

I forgot to mention that before i downclocked it, the average temperatures was about 60c on everything, does this change anything about the "is it safe?" subject?

Friend of mine have the exact same PSU, unused at home and are willing to sell it to me, would it be worth to buy that just to be on the safe side?
And from what I have read on the World of warcraft forum this is a issue that alot of people are having, but Blizzard and Nvidia are not doing anything for it to be fixed it seems, since it have lasted for years.

Thanks alot for a fast and comforting answer =)

60C is still very safe. Most GPUs shut down at 100-110C, so as long as you stay under 90C at all times that should not only guarantee stability, but longevity as well.

I would gladly accept the offer for a PSU, provided it is newer than your current one (although a mere fact that it has not been used also helps a lot).

You really have nothing to worry about here.

And a 650w one should be more than enough to keep everything up and running on my computer? If so ill probably go for it, instead of spending alot more money on a more powerful one in the shop.

Again, thanks alot for the fast answer =D

Bumping this again, new psu did not help. Still having reboots when starting the game.
Had a friend look at it for me and he said it might be my motherboard causing problems, since its kind of old he think it might have issues when im running windows 8.1
Could a windows7 install fix this problem?dont want to format if its not needed :(

Install msi afterburner and set power limit to +25.

Seems to help a lot of people.
