Hi guys. First I'd like to say I'm a longtime user of several forums but this is my first time posting here and I don't exactly know the etiquette so forgive me if I get it wrong. I just recently discovered this site and look forward to learning tons here.
I'm interested in building a workstation computer that can handle heavy duty video work. I will be using it to make music videos using After Effects and Premiere Pro and if this gives you an idea of the work load, I had one five minute video that had a 96 hour render time in After Effects. My current computer (which is currently in the shop after a power surge) was built by a pro in Los Angeles named Zen Kai (I'd recommend him for anyone in the area) and these are some of the pertinent specs:
SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X Radeon R9 290 100362VXSR TRI-X OC (UEFI) Video Card
G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory
Intel Core i7-4930K 3.4GHz LGA 2011 Six-Core Desktop Processor (overclocked)
OCZ Vector 150 Series VTR150-25SAT3-240G 2.5" MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
ASUS P9X79 WS SSI CEB Intel Motherboard with USB BIOS
The computer will also be used for music production using Propellerhead Reason, but that is generally less taxing than video work.
I'm interested in a computer that will cut down my render time on the finished videos and generally just improve my workflow for things like RAM previews in After Effects. I already have a COSMOS II Cooler Master case that I may end up reusing depending on how damaged my current computer turns out to be. (If it's not too damaged I'll just keep it as a back-up and get a new case, or maybe even upgrade it instead of starting over. Thoughts?).
Budget Range: $5,000-$9,000 after rebates and shipping. I'd like to keep it closer to five but am willing to spend the extra if I'm getting bang for the buck.
System Usage from Most to Least Important: Adobe After Effects. Adobe Premiere Pro. Propellerhead Reason. Corel Painter.
Are you buying a monitor: No
Parts to Upgrade: Looking to build from scratch, though possibly depending on the advice of the community, may choose to upgrade existing PC (described above).
Do you need to buy OS: Yes
Preferred Website(s) for Parts: I'm a noob, but Newegg is my best guess.
Location: Belleville, IL (right outside St. Louis, MO)
Parts Preferences: sexy beasty tasty parts
Overclocking: Maybe
SLI or Crossfire: No preference
Your Monitor Resolution: Not sure. I use a 47 inch Aquos Sharp TV as my main monitor and two HP Z Displays as secondary monitors.
Additional Comments: No bling. Just practical functionality and bang for the buck.
And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Can't stomach any more 90+ hour render times or slow RAM previews.
Include a list of any parts you have already selected with descriptively labeled links for parts. Please do not post only links.
