I'm building a new PC in preparation for Cyberpunk 2077. What do you think of this build?

Here is my build on newegg.com: https://secure.newegg.com/wishlist/sd/AiEv___leBZbuUm3UM2zWgWQ==

Every time I've upgraded my computer I've always purchased a motherboard that can support the most current gen CPU which I believe right now is the 10th gen right? I also have on there the 10th gen CPU. Thoughts on the ram I chose?

I also always double the ram every time I upgrade. So right now I have 16gb which is fine but 5 years from now who knows maybe 16 is now the standard? I like to have more than what becomes the standard for ram but perhaps it's overkill? Now I am thinking 32gb.

Thoughts on the case?

I'm not planning to do much overclocking beyond what is capable with EVGA Precision X1 and I already have a multiple solid state hard drives for my PC.

For the videocard I am thinking of getting an EVGA 3080 when its available although I am unsure which of the 3080s to get yet. Any thoughts on that would be appreciated.

BTW if I were to just connect all my existing hard drives to the new hardware would that cause any issues or would it be better if I loaded a fresh copy of Windows onto it? I'm just trying to avoid the pain in the butt of reinstalling everything.

Solution
Actually I just realized my power supply is already 850watts. It's an EVGA BQ Series Bronze Power Supply and is almost three years old. So I'm thinking I should just transfer that over.

Thanks for the info on the fans. I'll stick with the Noctua tower then and get the Noctua cooler. Good info on the SLI. I had no idea it was dead now.

Thoughts on this article I just read? It claims that if you're going to run a 10th gen CPU with a RTX 3080 you might want to consider a 1000 watt power supply. However they were referencing the Core i9-10900K CPU which is more powerful and twice as expensive as the CPU I picked out (Core i9-10850KA). Thoughts? What monitor do you have?

It's a 2k LG monitor. I went 2k because I figured at the time that 4k and even 8k is still a long ways before becoming standard in gaming. It seems even with the best PC build there are games that struggle to achieve decent FPS on max settings at 4k or more. I figured 2k was a good middle ground where I wouldn't take a massive performance hit and be able to play on max. So far I am loving this monitor and the g sync. It's beautiful.

  • You're going to need a bigger cooler for that CPU. When it ramps up its cores it will get hot. Try Noctua NH-D15 or 280mm AIO.
  • The case? 6 ODD bays? Not to mention it's a 10 year old design. Ugh!
  • Awesome power supply. Do you really need 1 kilowatt? A RTX 3080 will do fine with a good 850W. I guess 1 KW is not really total overkill.

I've never done liquid cooled before. Is it fairly simple to setup? Were you thinking something like this? https://www.newegg.com/fractal-design-liquid-cooling-system-celsius/p/N82E16835352067?Description=280mm AIO&cm_re=280mm_AIO--35-352-067--Product

or just a more basic fan like this? https://www.newegg.com/noctua-nh-d15-chromax-black/p/13C-0005-001K2?Description=Noctua NH-D15&cm_re=Noctua_NH-D15--13C-0005-001K2--Product

If by chance I decided down the road to do SLI would I need a beefier power supply? Maybe just get this 850watt one: https://www.newegg.com/evga-supernova-850-g5-220-g5-0850-x1-850w/p/N82E16817438161

I currently have a 750watt in my existing computer. In your opinion would it be worth harvesting it for my new computer or just going new since it's a number of years old already? Here it is: https://www.newegg.com/corsair-hx-series-hx750-750w/p/N82E16817139010?Item=N82E16817139010

I didn't think about the case and considering I have a nearly 10 year old computer I didn't think about that. What is considered a more modern case? I don't really care for anything with lots of lights. Ideally I like a case that is simple with good air flow and does its best to keep the internals clean (because I have cats).

Damn thanks for telling me about the case. What do you think of this one? It looks like it is compatible with the liquid cooled fan I linked up above.

  • The Noctua cooler would be fine.
  • SLI is dead. Forget about it. New GPU's are very powerful so game designers don't focus on optimization for multiple GPU's, for the most part.
  • How many years old is your power supply?
  • We need to wait for reviews of the new RTX cards before selecting one.
  • The Meshify case is great quality, has good airflow and is easily one of the most popular cases on the market. It will fit a 240mm AIO on top but if you want 280mm or 360mm it has to go in the front of the case. I'd just use the Noctua tower cooler or BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 4 and forget liquid. The Meshify comes with 2 fans, 1 in front and 1 in back. You'll want to add another fan in front. It uses Fractal X2 GP-12 fans.

  • You will have to do fresh install of windows using a new CPU and motherboard.
  • The EVGA Supernova 1000W P2 that you picked is a great power supply. Will easily power your system with RTX 3080.
  • You need to switch the case to Fractal Design Meshify S2, which has 185mm cooler clearance and 300mm power supply clearance. The parts you have now won't fit the compact Meshify C case.
  • The Meshify S2 uses 140 mm black fans and comes with 3 installed so you don't need to buy an extra one for the front.
  • The front fan on the Noctua cooler can be moved up to clear your RGB RAM. Low profile memory (corsair vengeance LPX) would be better but the cooler should just barely clear the side panel of the case. If you really want to overclock the i9 you'll need at least a 280mm or 360mm liquid cooler. At stock clocks the Noctua cooler should be fine.
  • Use Pcpartpicker to build your list. Copy/paste the permalink on the yellow bar to post it here. Click 'edit this part list' to make changes to it. Each time you edit the build the permalink changes so you have to copy/paste the new link each time you post it here.
  • What are the storage drives you intend to re-use with this build?
  • Here's a link for your list- https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jkfNXv

Thanks a bunch for all your help so far. I have changed the memory to your recommendation to make space easier. I've updated my part picker list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/TRYysk

I have the following SSD's:

Looks very good now. All parts compatible and everything will fit. The drives you have are good and should perform well. One thing to remember, when you put this all together, only connect the drive you will re-install windows on and leave the others mounted but disconnected. Windows is easily confused. Once you have windows up and running you can connect the other drives. All you need now is a few reviews of the 3080's to help decide which one to buy. Before you buy all these parts let's review everything one last time just to be sure it's good to go. Cheers!

Thank you so much. I was actually thinking about getting another one of these for my operating system. https://www.newegg.com/samsung-970-evo-plus-1tb/p/N82E16820147743

With the new motherboard I should have enough PCI express slots to have two.

Great! Samsung m.2 NVME drives are awesome, maybe a little overpriced. You lose function on SATA #2 when using the m.2 NVME drive so don't plug any of the other drives there. No worries you still have 5 SATA ports to use. The motherboard manual will show you which ones are which.
