Hey, i have had this problem for the past 3-4weeks, I currently have an amd FX -6300 six core processor 3.5Ghz, and my computer continuously shuts itself down while playing games and rendering from maya. When rendering from maya the cpu usage is 100% so im presuming they shut themselves down before overheating, but while playing games like diablo 3 and dayz standalone only 1 core seems to rise as high as 90+%. then inevitably after afew hours the computer shuts down again. im a computer noob so any advice or help would be appreciated. i have scanned for virus' and defragmented my harddrive already. there is some dust on the inside but other than that nothing visibly wrong. this alll started happening after i started rendering from maya 3-4 weeks ago.

Hi. Your assumptions are correct.

It sounds like your PC shuts down because the CPU or graphics card (GPU) temperatures become to high.

If your PC has dust and dirt inside, the coolers may not be working properly. You just have to clean it.
If it's clean inside, then the thermal paste between the CPU and its cooler is not doing its job and you have to change it.

Also, download any software that let you see the temps, like Aida64. Then stress the CPU and GPU (separately) and see which one has the high temps that makes your PC to shut down.
