Computer crashes after 7800GT install!

My computer runs fine until I start playing some games online or off, I will be able to play for awhile then my computer just crashes and shuts down. I was guessing its because of my power supply? I know I have the most recent drivers installed, can I get some suggestions. Im not really knowledgeable about computer so any help would be greatly appreciated thank you

my specs:
Motherboard: Intel D925XCV 925X
CPU: Pentium 4 3.4GHZ 1MB 800FSB LGA775
Memory: 2 GB Crucial 512MBx4 DDR2 PC4200
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 160GB 8MB Cache Serial ATA with NCQ HD
Video Card: eVGA 256-P2-N516 Geforce 7800GT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO PCI Express x16 Video Card
480 Watt Power Supply
 
I'll try and help. Your PSU seems okay, but what make is it? Temps might also be a problem, although it is unlikely.

I will also need more specific info - what games were you playing? Does it happen at the same time interval more or less? Do you receive a report from Windows stating that you recovered from a serious error after you started up again (after a crash)? Does it crash to Windows and then shuts down, or a complete power off situation?

If I don't reply tonight I will most likely be asleep, so keep coming back - there's alot of help on the forums. Also, next time you post, make the topic more descriptive - it will draw more attention.

When I play CoD2, Swat 4, BF2/SF almost all my games. the time interval doesnt seem to be the same but close when the crash occurs. I do not recieve any report my computer just shuts off...it doesnt crash to windows everything just shuts off.
 
I would definetly say its your power supply. It may say 480 watts but whats the continuous wattage it can supply.
Give the brand and the amp settings off the power supply. Should be on a sticker on the back.
Make sure your running the graphic card power by itself. Dont have anything else running on it.
 
Then it will almost seem as if this is a hardware exclusive problem - but don't deminish software aswell. Try reinstalling your chipset (motherboard) drivers - just the Intel ones ie Intel Chipset Installation utility - alternatively, go to Intel.com and download the latest drivers for your mobo (925X series / 925XE falls under the 925X).

Is this a completely new pc. Or was the gcard just added in to an existing build? I'm going to throw temps into the equation again. Is your CPU fan working? Do you have means to monitor temps in your case? I unfortunately don't have any suggestions on Nvidia temp monitoring, so hopefully sum1 will post soon with some info on that. On the cases where I have seen a PC shutting down in this manner, it was almost always temps or PSU problems and maybe memory problems. If the CPU overheats, then it will shut down - providing it has this functionality in the BIOS.

If your power draw on the PSU is too great, then the PSU will reset until achievable voltages are reached (ie. restart) - but this is an extreme theory because at start up the PSU also comes close to drawing full power load (almost) - and you might run into problems at this stage again.

So let's work with temps - try downloading SpeedFan, install and run it. Go to the Charts tab, and in this tab click the CPU check box. Under normal 2D mode in Windows (non games), check what your temps are over a period of time (under 10 minutes or so) and post your results (you will see a graph in the charts tab).

Try just using 2 of your 4 ram stick and place it in slot 1 and 3.

Maybe its a memory dump, your ram might have some error. Try running memtest86 to see if your ram is bad.
 
I have a feeling its the psu....

When it crashes (when playing a game only) I need to go to the back of the computer and flick the psu switch then unplug the cord and plug it back in before the computer will power up again, this is the only way after it crashes that it will start up again.
 
Why don't you borrow a friends? I have never seen a place that lends them but that may be a possibility.

With my old 280 PSU I tried to run a 6800GT and it always crashed. It was a cheap no-name PSU. Then I got an Antec TRUPower and now I can OC it past Ultra Speeds! It brought out the beast in the card! :twisted:

I would highly suggest you get a PSU in their ASAP (assuming that is your problem) because you could do damage to your $300 card and the rest of your rig with dodgy voltage and unreliable power source. Spend the $100 and save yourself the heartache and get a new PSU. :)

UPDATE: Well I felt it was the power supply that was givingh me problems because of the way the computer would just shut off after playing certain games on high settings. My guess was correct.

Even though the specs for the 7800GT say 460w power supply is good enough...my 480w would not handle the power hungry monster card.

I bought a XG vortex 600w (newegg) installed it and have ran my games on high with no shut downs, actually my computer performance is like a rocket now.

I will be gaming like a madman this weekend!
 
It says right in my manual for a e-GeForce 7800GT requires 460w I have a heavily modded case but I dont know what else is the explanation all I know is I replaced my psu with a 600w and now everything works great and my computer performance is skyrocketing.
 
I'm glad your system is up and running, I'm sure the PS was the problem. I understand that your 7800 GT requires a 460w PS. I did not want people to get the impression that all 7800 cards require a 460w PS. Your 7800 requires more power than mine for some reason. Perhaps yours is faster? I don't know why mine works fine at 380w and yours seems to need a 600w?

I'm having the same problem I have a asus motherboard with pentinum 4 processed 512 mb memory a thurmaster 480w ps........when I play battlefield2 my system shuts down no worning.the game used to run fine on my nvidia 6600LE but when I installed the 7800 gt my computer shuts down after 30min of playing please help
