Computer crashing on older games.

I have been experiencing, for a while now, an entire computer crash on games that by no means tax my components. Hearts of Iron III came is an RTS that came out in 2009 and even when it came out, it was hardly more intensive than a normal webpage. However, every time I try to play this game the same error occurs: The application stops responding, and on my second monitor the frame rate of whatever I was doing grinds to a sluggish speed. If I try to close the application even with Task Manager, my entire PC freezes.

Another game, Modern Warfare 3, which is similarly old, gave me the exact same problem. After running the game and Steam as an administrator, everything seemed to fix itself. This solution does not apply to Hearts of Iron III. Also, I have tried a GPU driver wipe and reinstall, which didn't fix either of the two games.

No clue as to what component is to blame here. I initially thought it was the GPU but now I'm not sure.

Have you tried running it as both an admion and in compatibility mode with 7 or xp? Also, disable dpi scaling(above running as admin) in the compatibility tab.
