A FORMAT operation will not change the way the PARTITIONS on a HDD are set up. If your HDD has two partitions and / or some Unallocated Space AND you do NOT have anything on it you want to save, you can proceed as below. HOWEVER, if there is any data you want on that drive, BACK IT UP to another storage place before proceeding.
Now, I'm going to assume you are using Win 7 or 8 that knows how to deal with HDD's over 2 GB and GPT Partitioning.
Go into Disk Management to the 5 TB unit, probably in the lower right pane. For each block that represents a Partition, RIGHT-click on it and choose to Delete it. Do this until the whole HDD is one piece of Unallocated Space. Now, RIGHT-click on that and choose to Create a New Simple Volume but WATCH carefully. Choose the option to make a GPT Partition and let it use up all the space available for this. The new Partition does NOT need to be bootable (assuming you're only using it for data, and not for booting). When you have the options set correctly let it go to work. This might take a LOOONNNGG time, so just let it run and be patient. When it is finished, back out of Disk Management and reboot so Windows updates its Registry properly. Now that unit should show up in Explorer as a drive of about 4.6 TB.
