Hi everyone,
I was hoping someone might be able to identify what's going wrong with my system failing to boot, and if there is a chance it is a fixable problem.
I've built my own system, which has been stable for several years, but quite recently decided to poke around inside it to see if I could reduce the amount of noise it was making. So I did some light maintenance (e.g. tightening screws for fans, removing dust, figuring out which fans were most noisy so I could replace them), after which I found problems booting the system. Specifically, if I now try to power it on I find that all the fans operate normally except for the CPU fan - which initially starts spinning for a few seconds, then stops, then repeatedly tries to start but fails (it jolts every few seconds). There is no display on the monitor after powering on, but it seems like everything inside the computer is working except the CPU.
I have no idea how this might of happened - I took precautions when checking my system. I wore a grounded anti-static wristband, was careful to avoid touching any components, and only messed around with the power provided to fans (including for CPU) to identify where noise was originating from.
I've tried following the stickied troubleshooting list at the top of this forum, but I feel I've hit a brickwall here: I've checked / rechecked all power cables, replaced the video card with another working one, checked RAM, looked to see if there are somehow short circuits on MB. My best guess is I've somehow made a (potentially very costly) mistake, and brushed the MB near the CPU and fried it. I guess I was working in a carpeted room, despite using an ESD wristband, but I've never had an issue like this in the past.
I'd be grateful for any ideas from anyone else on what might be the issue here. I'm preparing for the possibility that I'll have to pay several hundred quid for a new system, though.
