I have a bit of a weird problem, sometimes when I restart my computer or an application does it after installing my computer fails to post.

The computer goes through the shutdown sequence no problem and everything shuts down. When it starts again it fails to post and just sits there running but giving me a black screen. I then have to physically push the reset button for it to start again properly.

The weird thing about it is that this is not a constant problem, I'd say it happens about 30% of the times when I restart from Windows.

Any ideas on what could be causing this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

For reference...
- I'm running a stock AMD FX 8320 sitting on an ASUS M5A97 EVO R2.0 Motherboard.
- My 16GB of ram consists of 2x4GB Corsair Vengeance (CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9R), and 2x4GB Corsair Vengeance Low Profile (CML8GX3M2A1600C9).
- Graphics are provided by an EVGA 970 SSC ACX 2.0+ and sound by an Asus Xonar DGX PCIe.
- Storage consists of 3x SSD, 3x mechanical, and 1x IDE mechanical connected via a PCI card.

How can that be? I don't boot from any of the mechanical drives and my two boot drives are pretty reliable, a 250GB Samsung Evo 850 and a 500GB Samsung Evo 860.

1. Are you motherboards drivers and BIOS all up to date?
2. What operating system are you using? Windows 10 may not be very compatible with your motherboard.

I'm running both Windows 7 (In the 250GB SSD) and Windows 10 (In the 500GB SSD). To be honest I don't think the problem is with the OS because it shuts down properly, it's the restart that's the problem.

With the MOBO, again I don't think the drivers will have anything to do with it because they only kick in later after posting when loading the OS.

With the bios, yes they are up to date.

You did not list your power supply in the original post. Is it a good quality?

It's not the best out there but it's good enough in my opinion. It's a BeQuiet Pure Power 9 600W .

That is a good quality PSU. If all your motherboard drivers and BIOS are up to date, as much as they can be with an older motherboard, you will likely just have to accept it's based on an aging AMD 970/SB950 chipset and will probably never run perfectly stable.

Yeah, you're probably right. The worst thing is that because the problem happens at random times it means I can't troubleshoot it.

Thanks anyway.
