Computer fails to recognize cd/optical drive after updating to win 7 from vista

when i converted from VISTA to win7 32 bit the sytem reports failure 39 ( corupted driver) There is no way I can re-install win because of the the drive. Rest of the system is fine.. would appreciate any suggestions. THX john
