I just upgraded to an I9 9900k from an I5 9600k. When I put in the i9 it booted once and froze. When it froze it kept my screen up and did not blue screen. It acted like an overheat freeze. I think my problem is my cooler cant handle the new cpu. Please help me because I don't know what to do.

I put my i5 back into my computer and it started up with no problems.

specs.

Solution
If all you changed was the cpu, then I'd suggest checking the cpu socket for bent/broken pins.
If you changed the cpu and the motherboard, then you need to reinstall Windows.

1)You can't run a 9900K with a 212 Evo. You WILL run into temperature issues at some point.
360mm AIO, custom loop, or bust.
Yes, I know 280mm units also work, but the OC headroom isn't as high. I mean, who gets that cpu and ISN'T tempted to OC it at some point in time...

2)I agree with Aerowei - what is the power supply?

Thank you for your feedback. I like to do my upgrades little at a time and I wasnt thinking of the amount of an upgrade that I was making. I currently have a mid tower and with these recommendation I am going to purchase a full tower and a 360mm cooler thank you.
Also my psu is a CORSAIR HXi Series, HX1000i, 1000 Watt, 80+ Platinum Certified

I'd at least clear the CMOS/reset BIOS, and, if needed, fresh install of Windows to clear any potential OS confusion over the added cores/threads, and see what your temps are. Yes, the 212 will likely be insufficient, but, Intel's XTU will allow you to lower clock speeds and/or core voltage, effectively running it as an double 7700K at 4.5 GHz, if needed, while awaiting your new cooler. The current cooler should not stop it from POSTING/booting....

Would I still need to reinstall windows if if works with my other processor. Also I tried to do it once and it froze. Ive had it for a year but they released in 2014.
Yes i checked for broken pins and I did not find any.
