Computer freezes and glitches

I have a hp dx2000 running windows xp and has a Intel Pentium 4 processor. It was not used for about 7 years but then I fixed it up last December and have been using it as a second computer. It worked fine but one day the system froze and showed cold and lines on the screen. I restarted it and the it worked ok. But then again it occurred...So I did the same as before but now every time I turn on the pc the same thing happens either it happens in the welcome screen or as the desktop comes on. I noticed that always before this happens the hard disk light status on for about 2 minutes. Any help?

Do you have another hard drive you could try one with windows on it just to see if it still does it ?
