I know I've seen questions with similar problem, but can anyone help me with this and what specifically causes this. Computer hangs at random times and HDD light stays off.

Solution
yes. esp if the PSU doesnt give out stable voltage on the 12V. but most hardware are flexible. and if the motherboard is cheap/older version with a basic voltage regulator setup and hardly any voltage protection. then yah it will cause your RAM or CPU to malfunction and freeze up your system. worst case damage some of your hardware.

if you list out all your hardware specs from the beginning, more people will be willing to help your case.
we can try chgecking the health of your HDD. just open your command prompt. press winkey+s. type "cmd". type "chkdsk /scan c:". and also do your other drives. if it finds bad sectors on your scan. try to back up your data to another drive as much as you can without freezing your PC. and do the following command "chkdsk /r /x c:" to fix your HDD. and do a fresh install of windows. tho its preferrable you buy a new HDD if there are too many bad sectors on teh drive already.
