I've been trying to deal with this issue for almost 2 years now, with no success.
Current build:
AMD FX-9590 @ 4.7GHz (Stock)
Corsair H100i v2
16GB Dual-Channel Corsair CMY16GX3M2A1600C9 DDR3 @ 800MHz (9-9-9-24)
Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 R5
EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
Mushkin MKNSSDEC512GB (OS)
Western Digital WDC WD20EURX-57T0FY0 (Files)
Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM006-2DM164 (Games)
Corsair RM850 PSU
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
This is a rather lengthy and complex issue.
My computer will randomly freeze, and it can be anywhere from once a day, once a week, to 10 times in an hour. It’s sporadic. When I say freeze, I mean everything stops, mouse/KB input does not work, all screens freeze, everything just stops. Windows does not crash or go to BSOD, it just sits there, stuck until I do a hard reboot.
This has been going on since I’ve had this computer (custom build – Dec 2015). Since then I’ve changed almost every part via upgrading, which eliminates certain parts as a culprit.
Original build:
AMD FX-4350 @ 4.2GHz (Stock)
Stock heatsink/fan
16GB Dual-Channel Corsair CMY16GX3M2A1600C9 DDR3 @ 800MHz (9-9-9-24)
ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0
EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960
Mushkin MKNSSDEC512GB (OS)
Western Digital WDC WD20EURX-57T0FY0
Corsair RM850 PSU
Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
September 2016
GPU > changed GTX 960 to GTX 1070
January 2017
OS > upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 via a fresh install and format
February 2017
CPU > changed FX-4350 to FX-9590
Mobo > changed ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 to Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 R5
The problem still persists, so I scanned the Windows files for errors, everything is fine. I've formatted/reinstalled Windows several times since then, even on other hard drives to eliminate the SSD being the culprit. I ran a memory test on each set of RAM with no errors. The problem persists with either set, or both. I ran a check disk on each drive with no errors.
I've checked Windows Event Viewer and there is nothing (that I can tell) related to a crash or stop. It's also not related to specific program or HDD, because I've had freezes while running different programs from different drives. I primarily play games and have verified the games files and reinstalled several times throughout these years.
I don't think it's temperature related because with the H100i the CPU never goes above 45C, and even on the most demanding games my GPU sits around 80C. I've had freezes where the GPU was only around 55C at the time as well.
I've used HWinfo and other monitoring programs to watch temps and voltages, and to the best of my knowledge the numbers never deviate more than the normal +/-.
So to recap all of my troubleshooting in one tl;dr:
-Upgraded almost every component minus PSU/RAM/SSD.
-Ran Memtest86 on each set of RAM seperately and together, no errors.
-Swapped out PSU for a different one, still freezes.
-No Windows event viewer logs related to freeze.
-Reinstalled Windows numerous times on various hard drives, still freezes.
-Ran programs from the same drive as well as different drives, still freezes.
-All of my drivers are up to date.
-BIOS is up to date.
-Ran voltage/temp logs to check for deviations, everything looks nominal.
