My computer is completely freezing, It happens when playing games.
The freeze does not recover, the computer does not respond to any keyboard or mouse input.
Shutting down the computer with the power button is the only way to get the computer running again,
Ran memtest, no issues.
Reinstalled windows and updated all drivers and bios, freezing still occurs.

i7 6700k
GTX 970 x2
Gigabyte Z170-SLI
2x8gb ram

Any ideas on where to look next for the issue?

does the freeze happen when running on the onboard GPU/single GPU?
I have had similar issues, the problem was the GPU. the system was in fact working but the screen would not refresh/change so it looked like a hard lock-up.

At this point I would run another environment. if you boot to a linux cd and the reboot does not occur the problem has to be in the software (drivers,OS) if the reboot happens in linux, then it is for sure a hardware issue.

https://linuxmint.com/download_lmde.php <--can be installed to thumb drive
I am using mint Linux now, very similar to windows 7 so you should feel comfortable exploring. while you are running the CD no damage/changes will happen to your system. browse the net, play a movie or two, try to recreate the crash.

I have tried to run both mint and ubuntu. both failed to run. I used rufus to create a bootable usb for this.
