Computer Freezing

Hi i have a Asus G72GX laptop, and lately ill be on a browser or skype and then all of a sudden, my computer just freezes up, cant move the mouse, or type anything it just freezes and i have to do a hard reset, when i restart it and it comes back up, it would do it maybe minutes later or hours depending, ive tried everything, theres nothing wrong with the memory, ive tried reinstalling windows 7 twice, it would work for a while then it would start doing it again, i dont no what else to do, please any help would be appreciated, if you need more info let me and ill give it, please reply ASAP!!!

Three things to try:

1. Turn of Bass Boost feature in your Creative Sound settings (if you have it enabled). Can cause freezes.

2. If 1 desn't work, try uninstalling Creative Media Source and/or Audigy HD sound software that is bundled with your laptop altogether. These are not required in order to have sound, and can cause all sorts of stability problems, including freezing. Creative make the dodgiest drivers in the history of computing.

2. If 1 and 2 fail to fix your issue, you can try reinstalling Windows and NOT installing any Windows Updates (i.e. diasable automatic updates). I have heard some laptops are bought down in exactly the manner you describe by a Microsoft update.

ya i had this problem before and i was told to uninstall the audigy hd sound and thats what i did and i reinstalled windows but i didnt do the dont install updates part its only freezed once, but if it keeps doing i will do the 3rd option and where do i go to turn off the bass boost feature (if i still have it?) but thanks for the help

Then it almost certainly a hardware fault. Most likely culprit is the integrated GPU - since it happens during web browsing and Skype which both would activate the GPU into "Performance Mode" (presumably this occurs in games also?). Unfortunately with laptops, hardware faults (other than RAM) are not really readily fixable.

well ive had this thing for a year and this never happened, and then my harddrive and i had to replace it, since ive had this new harddrive, thats when it started doing it? do you think it could be the harddrive itself? do i need to replace it?

A bad HDD is IMO extremely unlikely to result in the symptoms you are experiencing. If you have a faulty harddrive pretty nothing would work right (e.g. you wouldn't even be able to get Win7 installed!). MS NTFS (the file system used by Windows 7) is very good at correcting bad HDD sectors, and subsequently marking them as bad (and no longer used). A utility to read your harddrive's S.M.A.R.T. data (such as Speedfan) will tell you if there is anything wrong with the drive if you really want to be certain (assuming you have S,M.A.R.T. enabled in your laptops BIOS).

ya i tested it theres nothing wrong with the harddrive, but idk what else could it be, could it be my graphics card maybe going out, or the mother board? i really hope its nothing severe like that

right now i been running both my steam and skype in administrator mode and so far my computers been good

An update: i just got done with a skype call and 10 minutes later my computer frooze again, but only frooze for bout a good 20 secs and then it unfroozed itself idk why its doing this now please help

now that i think of this, the only times this has froozen now is when iam in a call on skype, and ive been talking to skype support but they dont no whats going on do you think u no a solution please?

ok i got a whole bunch of freezes, i got 3 of them in literally in 1 whole minute, once it unfreezed, i saw this pop up and i went to the event viewer and found this, 2 ERROS HERE

now my computer did it again, this time it stayed frozen, and i had to do a hard reset, it did this earlier and i had this message appear on my event viewer:

You definitely have GPU issues, either hardware or software. If it is the latter it can be fixed. Try this:

1. Control Panel->Windows Update->Change Settings->"Download updates but let me choose whether to install them".
2. Download the latest driver from the nvidia website.
3. Go to Device Manager, select your display adaptor, and uninstall it, choose to also delete drivers when prompted.
4. Reboot computer into safe mode by pressing f8 when the computer boots, when prompted to install new display driver choose "never install a driver for this device"
5. Navigate to c:\windows\system32\drivers\ and delete the file nvlddmkm.sys. Take note of the date of this file.
6. Navigate to c:\windows\system32 and delete all other files of the same date as nvlddmkm.sys that begin with the letters 'nv'.
6a. For 64bit Windows, repeat step 6 in c:\windows\sysWOW64.
7. Reboot to normal Windows, if prompted again to install a driver choose "never install a driver for this device".
8. Install the driver which you downloaded from the nvidia website.
