Computer Malfunction 2016
Select Boot Device Rectangle on Start Up
Computer HP Compaq Presario Model CQ 5320 F
Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1; with 6 month old 1 tb 64 bit Seagate hard drive replaced hp damaged hard drive several months ago. Downloaded Windows 7 from recovery discs without product key; 1st disc downloaded, 2nd disc downloaded 70%- put disc back in and it finished, 3rd disc did same as 2nd for download. Did not have Service Pack 1. Download completed I went online and downloaded a ton of updates then Service Pack 1 displayed on basic information about your computer.
Computer was working fine since replaced hard drive 6 months ago.
Then had computer freeze problem, not able to move desktop icons, type in, Google search menu & words processor sometimes it allows typing and copying others it erases existing text when trying to add before text, open task bar menu or functions, start menu as well both just flicker. Volume display only one that works when this problem occurs.
Have been experiencing problems copying items from web pages and then pasting them to Word Processor. Had blue cursor circle continuously couple times. Trying to copy and paste brings up word processor experienced an error and needs to close occasionally.
Reset to earlier time, no luck. Did hardware diagnostics with hp diagnostic and windows ram & sfc/scannow( for operating system) diagnostic.
Desktop and other functions sometimes work spontaneously while computer is being used and others after it is left on standby.

Restarted then blue screen with:
Select boot device
ST 1000 DM003-1 ER162
hp DVD-RAM GH40L
F4 Boot using defaults

Have tried all three boot device options. Select boot device blue rectangle comes up sometimes and others does not. Checked all connections.
Disconnected hard drive and turned on computer and blue rectangle with hp dvd-ram gh40L came up as expected.
Replaced battery on mother board and on start up black screen comes up with bios and other things on it then went to usual security sign in screen. Tried restart several more times and normal start up occurred.
Used you tube on one thing for 45 minutes which appeared to cause problem.

Which Boot Device do I use and is the problem software due to using recovery discs or is it virus, malaware, Trojan horse, hacker or other thing causing the problem?
Will reloading software using recovery discs or free Windows 10 download solve the issue?
Does it mean my computer is dying other than the hard drive which is new(Tower is from 2008)?
Norton pop up on screen instantaneously and downloaded Norton Security; I already had Norton on computer. Download worked and is valid Norton. Prior to this Norton had been acting up as i clicked icons for update & Norton and they said it was not valid Norton do you want to delete and i did. Start menu in all programs still worked. Have been listening to You tube now for 30 minutes several songs and problem is not occurring. Could this mean virus?
Now i cannot download microsoft updates just stays at 0 % and keeps saying downloading updates. Stated i had 16 updates. Tried msconfig hide all microsoft services, auto update, disble update, etc. Tried downloading updates from website including update downloader too. still no luck.
Sorry about the amount of text in this message.

Hello... The MB battery hold the "1" & "0" in the CMOS chip... for your MB/Hardware devices... and there is capacitor, in that circuit, that gives you reasonable time to change it, and not lose or change the CMOS information. I think your Cmos information needs to be "re-created".

Let's try a proper "battery removal" AND CMOS reset Clear to the MB ...ok? B /

Take your time here and be slow and careful to your MB... look in your MB manual/Pdf for pictures and location of the pins. B )
1) un-plug PS from wall.
2) remove MB battery
3) place jumper pins/switch on MB to clear the capacitors... for ~3 mins
4) remove Jumper/switch
5) re-install battery
6) plug monitor into the MB video output OR Video card for a BOOT display
8) plug in PS to wall
9) Boot computer.

Computer worked fairly well except for inconsistent windows update downloading; downloaded one then just stayed on 0 %. Computer acted up again today, typing issues, etc.
Did all except plug monitor in MB video....as I do not see any internal or external connection. Removed 2 jumper switches and then restarted computer; now desktop icons will not move. I clicked F 4 default boot device on blue square. Which one should I use: Select boot device
ST 1000 DM003-1 ER162 (February replaced with Seagate hard drive)
hp DVD-RAM GH40L
F4 Boot using defaults
I am wondering if there is something else on my computer dying or maybe try reload of windows 7; I am leaning to seeing if I can download windows 10 and maybe that will solve the issue.
Any suggestions?
Blue square select boot device comes up on start up; I check one and normal start up resumes. The software is the original made for HP original hard drive.

Sata 1 Went straight to sign with password screen normal start up and am presently using it in this state to interact with you. Will try some other functions.

Computer working fine connected to Sata 1 wondering if I should try to boot bios and get into Sata and try to fix computer with both SATA 1 and SATA 2 connected

computer acting up again today, worked for about a day. On start up it shows select boot device square with only ST 1000 DM003-1 ER162 and f4 boot using defaults. uhg!

Hello... Your CMOS battery is not saving information?... if you are experiencing Lose of Time, drive order information, Boot orders, etc. the Low cost possible solution to this is to Buy a NEW MB battery., $1

As a "Simple test" set your Time day year and BOOT order, save&exit... before you shut off your computer for the night... If the boot order changes or the Time day year is not set correctly again, the battery has worn out.

Hello... CMOS chips are prone to damage and hold all the info from your BIO's programing... but this information comes from MB firmware... to start with... B /
So you need to re-flash the MB with the "correct revision" for that MB production run... if you can't get results this way try a RMA on the MB... B /
You HD is also being the constant nagging here too... that is a hardware DATA communication device... and all the proper connections need to be maintained and in proper order... Try a NEW HD, power connection and cable, in the MB port... do things improve?... B /

bios cannot be updates it is dated to 2011 when warranty expired and hp site said cannot be updated. would hardware data communication and power cable in motherboard show up on hardware diagnostics which i have done with hp diagnostics
