Computer Gradual Lag, Then Crash/BSOD

Alright, my computer is about 6 years old now, a Gateway SX2802. 6GB RAM, 1TB HDD (600GB+ remaining), Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q8300 @ 2.50GHz (4 CPUs), Windows 7 64-bit, and a AMD Radeon HD 6570.

Now the specs are out of the way, the issue is, that a few months ago, my pc has started to lag and crash. Computer boots fine, do my casual thing, then a few hours latter or after waking my computer up from it sleeping, the computer gradually begins to lag.

The lag being, the mouse cursor skips and the audio crackles.

I have no issues with playing most games at High settings, and I am also a Live Streamer on Twitch. I can recreate this almost everytime playing the game Team Fortress 2. Now, this is the only game I can recreate this on. All of games are fine, CoD, BF 3, Dota 2, stuff like that. Take note that after a restart, the computer runs perfectly fine.

I am having issues determining what the problem is. All of my drivers are up to date, as I have used DriverUpdate to do this for me for Hardware Updates. I just started using DriverUpdate last week, and this issue has been going on for atleast half a year now or longer.

I have ran Memtest, Prime95, and I have defragged and error checked my HDD. All with no red flags and errors. Also, my computer is not overheating in any area as well.

After looking into my MiniDumps, I have noticed some issues.

Hal.dll and ntoskrnl.exe were the culprits to these BSODs. These both returned a x0124 Bug Code. Ntoskrnl.exe is a NT Kernal & Systems, and I know Hal.dll is relating to the System as well.

I am asking for help on how to fix this on going issue. I can be doing homework on my computer or gaming, and this lag will come out of nowhere, creating a crash. I would be grateful if we could figure this out, as I have been trying to do this for such a long time. I want to aim to avoid reinstalling Windows 7 for as long as possible since I have so much on it that I need. So all help will be appreciated, thank you.

Have you checked temps of machine when it crashes? Is CPU at 100% utilization when this starts happening? It's possible your system has degraded to an unusable state. 5 years is fairly old, perhaps the processor has met it's match.

CPU crashes as it fluctuates around 3%-32%. Temps are all below maximum. I was thinking the same thing, but when I did the Prime95 stress test, CPU was tested at 100% and I was still using my computer with no issues or lag.

Just performed a stress test on my GPU, and with it maxed out, there is the movement delay, but not sound stuttering and cursor skipping. Once the test is stopped, the computer returns to normal.

Now when the issue lag is happening, I can close everything, and it will still continue, and get worse. Eventually the PC will freeze and BSOD.

It could be anything. You can check with your mobo manufacturer on voltage points and check to see if the right voltages are being delivered. It's possible any part on the machine could be failing. Do you have anything spare that you could start swapping parts in and out to attempt to troubleshoot? Power supply, RAM, HDD could all be potential issues. Outside of that, GPU and CPU. From CPU usage it doesn't sound like it's CPU and from GPU stress test, likely not that. Typically you'd see the screen freeze or flash, or at least get some artifacts anyways, or no display.

Might be easiest to start with RAM. Since you have more than 1 stick, take them all out but 1 and attempt to boot from the one. If it freezes, change DIMM slot. If it still freezes, attempt a different ram module. If it still fails, that eliminates it. Go about it methodically.

I will run another memtest until my girlfriend gets here and post back on the results. If there are any errors or issues, I will do what you said about the RAM, due that it could take awhile to recreate this problem.

No errors or anything dispite such a short test, but would updating my BIOS help at all? And how would I go about doing that since there is no update software for it. I cannot seem to find my motherboard or BIOS anywhere on the internet.

It's possible, but likely you'd notice the problem immediately after you installed some type of new hardware, or would have had BIOS issues from the very beginning or immediately after updating it. Who is your motherboard manufacturer? Is this a pre-built or custom built?

Edit: Sorry, just noticed this is a Gateway.

Check here for drivers and updates: http://support.gateway.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=2315

Try updating BIOS and chipset drivers.

It is prebuilt. American Megatrends.

It might possibly be my GPU. I have had the GPU the entire time I have had the computer, but I didn't notice this issue until about 8 months ago. So maybe it was an update that caused this?

Motherboard: P01-A0
BIOS Version: AMI v02.66

Wow, I will check this out. I have been looking for this page for a long time, but it has always wanted me to be in warranty to access it. Thank you.

I would love a SSD, I am just having a hard time choosing one because the Specs Page for my computer only says SATA, it doesn't say if there are multiple ports, which SATA it is, or anything. And since I am usually busy with work, I get too lazy to take it apart and find out myself. If I could run 2 HDs, that'd be awesome. One SSD for OS and games, and the HDD for software and other files.

I am guessing a 256GB SSD is more than suffice?

Haha. So you are confident it is the HDD? I scanned it with Error Checking, have 600GB free, and it is defragged. I mean it sounds fine too. It just takes awhile to get it to happen sometimes, and even sometimes it won't happen. It is almost guaranteed that once the computer falls asleep, wakes up, and then play a game like TF2, it will happen.
