My problem started about 2 weeks ago when I went to shut off my machine for the night (I've been using this machine for 6 months or so with no problems). I awoke to find that the machine had shut down, but for some reason, the fans had continued to run in the machine all night. I attempted to reset, and use the power switch to turn off the computer, and it didn't work. I had to turn off the power from the power suppy to turn off the computer. I then proceeded to try and turn the computer back on, but I ran into a problem. The fans would spin up for about 1-2 seconds, and then shut off. I would repeat this until either I held the power switch down, or turned the power supply off.

After reading several forums, I ended up thinking it was a faulty power supply, and purchased the one listed above (because of all the great reviews, and because I trust Corsair). This ended up not being my problem, as after installation, my problem persisted. The next attempt at a solution was to remove the CMOS battery, and I did. I left it out for about a half-hour and put it back in, did a test start, and it worked. I put it back together, put it back into place, and turned it on, and it worked. Windows booted up, everything as it should be. That night, I went to shut it off, all fine.

My current problem seems to be similar to many, but I have yet to find the culprit. This morning, I turned on the computer, and it hung after checking NVRAM (although it did say my CMOS was clear or something and gave me the option to a) Press F1 and enter in the settings myself, or b) Press F2 and load default settings). I ended up pressing F2 this time around, letting it load up the default settings. And this is where it hung up on checking NVRAM.

I then deduced it might be a bad battery, and purchased one today (CR2032 3V Lithium Ion Battery). Before heading out to buy one, I tried moving the BIOS jumper from the 2 pins, to the 1 pin and blank, for a few minutes. I moved it back and restarted the computer. This time, the error came up something like "Chassis Intrusion Detected. Fatal Error in Booting." That didn't work, so on to the new battery, although...before putting it in, I tried updating my BIOS to the newest version of the P5E from Asus using a Flash Drive (worked successfully, although after restarting, same error). After that didn't work I took out the old battery, waited about 2 minutes, and inserted the new battery. This time, upon booting up, I chose F1 and entered in my options in the BIOS, saved and exited to restart. SAME PROBLEM.

This is where I currently am (although I tried messing with the USB legacy settings a bit in the BIOS).

So please, if you have any advice to try, I would very much appreciate it, and sorry for the long-winded post, just wanting to provide as much information as possible to help you help me, thanks!

On the off chance that you might still get an email update on this post, can you tell us how you resolved the hanging NVRAM Check issue? Have same with ASUS P5Q-E.

i had similar problem with my Asus P4c-800e motherboard:

during 'Checking Nvram', screen freezes, keyboard doesn't respond to key strokes, i ended up replacing motherboard as well as video card - an ATI x1650. problem solved then.
