I've been trying to deal with this issue for almost 3 years now, with no success.
Current build:
AMD FX-9590 @ 4.7GHz (Stock)
Corsair H100i v2
32GB Dual-Channel Corsair CMY16GX3M2A1600C9 DDR3 @ 667MHz (9-9-9-24)
Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 R5
EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
Samsung Evo 250GB MZ-76E250B/AM (OS)
Western Digital WDC WD20EURX-57T0FY0 (Files)
Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM006-2DM164 (Games)
Corsair RM850 PSU
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
This is a rather lengthy and complex issue.
My computer will randomly freeze, and it can be anywhere from once a day, once a week, to 10 times in an hour. It’s sporadic. When I say freeze, I mean everything stops, mouse/KB input does not work, all screens freeze, everything just stops. Windows does not crash or go to BSOD, it just sits there, stuck until I do a hard reboot.
This has been going on since I’ve had this computer (custom build – Dec 2015). Since then I’ve upgraded or swapped every possible part.
Original build:
AMD FX-4350 @ 4.2GHz (Stock)
Stock heatsink/fan
16GB Dual-Channel Corsair CMY16GX3M2A1600C9 DDR3 @ 800MHz (9-9-9-24)
ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0
EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960
Mushkin MKNSSDEC512GB (OS)
Western Digital WDC WD20EURX-57T0FY0
Corsair RM850 PSU
Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
Drivers > Have tried both AMD and Nvidia drivers (with respective cards), current and previous build drivers
GPU > changed GTX 960 to GTX 1070, have also tried an AMD Radeon card just to test if issue persists
OS > upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 via a fresh install and format, have since then formatted and installed a fresh copy of OEM Windows 10 Pro x64 from MSDN several times
HDD/SSD > Tried Windows 10 on each HDD and even bought the new Samsung Evo last month, still persists
CPU > upgraded from FX-4350 to FX-9590
CPU cooler > upgraded from stock heatsink/fan to Corsair H100i v2
Mobo > changed ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 to Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 R5
PSU > have tested 2 different PSUs including my own, issue persists through both
RAM > tested with my own and my friend’s RAM, his being HyperX
Software > tested with complete fresh install + Nvidia drivers, nothing else, issue persists
The problem still persists, so I scanned the Windows files for errors, everything is fine. I've formatted/reinstalled Windows several times since then, even on other hard drives to eliminate the SSD being the culprit. I ran a memory test on each set of RAM with no errors. The problem persists with either set, or both. I ran a check disk on each drive with no errors.
I've checked Windows Event Viewer and there is nothing (that I can tell) related to a crash or stop. It's also not related to specific program or HDD, because I've had freezes while running different programs from different drives. It has frozen while on the desktop at idle, it has frozen on YouTube while just browsing videos. I primarily play games and have verified the games files and reinstalled several times throughout these years. I have moved the game installs from HDD to HDD, still freezes.
I don't think it's temperature related because with the H100i the CPU never goes above 45C, and even on the most demanding games my GPU sits around 80C. I've had freezes where the GPU was only around 55C at the time as well.
I've used HWinfo and other monitoring programs to watch temps and voltages, and to the best of my knowledge the numbers never deviate more than the normal +/-.
So to recap all of my troubleshooting in one tl;dr:
-Upgraded almost every component minus PSU/RAM, however I swapped those out with another set and the issue remained.
-Ran Memtest86 on each set of RAM separately and together, no errors.
-No Windows event viewer logs related to freeze.
-Reinstalled (fresh format) Windows numerous times on various hard drives, still freezes.
-Ran programs from the same drive as well as different drives, still freezes.
-All of my drivers are up to date.
-Underclocked GPU slightly due to it being factory OC, problem still persisted.
-BIOS is up to date.
-Ran voltage/temp logs to check for deviations, everything looks nominal.
-Changed cases through the problem, same issue.
-Changed SSD, still have the issue.
-New SATA cable as well as changing SATA ports, still freezes.
