Hi guys,

Good day.

I'm trying to upgrade my old computer processor, and I need some helps.
I have searched and follow the instructions from some threads but I'm still stuck with the problem.

So, I have an old computer with Intel Pentium 4 631 3.0Ghz processor, and I changed the processor to Intel Core 2 Duo e6600 (it's not a new one). After changed, there is no display on the monitor (monitor went to sleep) when starting up the computer. The CPU fan is running though, and the power LED is on too. But I don't hear any sound indicating the computer passed the POST. By the way, when I removed the RAM, there is unlimited short beep from the computer.

This is my computer specs:
Motherboard: ECS > P4M900T-M2 (V1.0)
RAM: Kingston kvr800d2n6/2g (2 pieces)
GPU: Nvidia Geforce 8600 GTS (I tried to remove the card and use onboard VGA too, to make sure it's not GPU problem).
PSU: Powerlogic Magnum Pro 275 (550w peak) (looks like this: https://www.google.com/search?q=Powerlogic+Magnum+Pro+275+(550w+peak)&client=firefox-b-ab&biw=1304&bih=671&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj28tmSz5vQAhVJvo8KHYCMBYwQ_AUIBigB#imgrc=kskZ-IPO74PmfM%3A)

Also, I have tried to:
1. Make sure the motherboard can support the new processor.
2. Update the BIOS to the latest version.
3. Change the RAM to Kingston kvr667d2n5/1g. (only 1 piece of RAM)
4. Reset the BIOS either with moving the jumper or remove the CMOS battery.
5. Unplug the power cable and hold computer power button for 30 seconds.
6. Checked the new processor (core 2 duo e6600), it is working in dell optiplex 780.

If I put back the old processor (Pentium 4 631), the computer is running well.
I running out of idea. Is there anything I missed? Please help
And I'm sorry for my bad english.

Regards

You're running into incompatibilities. That can happen with a PCI-Express 2.0 or newer GPU in an old motherboard; your older and compatible GPU is PCI-Express 1.x. You could manually configure the memory frequency to 333 MHz (DDR2-667) and then the Kingston modules should work. They most likely never ran at 800 MHz with the old CPU.
According to http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-ECS/P4M900T-M2(V1.0).html that CPU is supported; is this your motherboard? http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Product/Product_Overview.aspx?CategoryID=1&DetailID=822&DetailName=Feature&MenuID=24&LanID=0 It also includes the Core 2 Duo 6600 in the CPU compatibility list.

You are sure the E6600 is not http://ark.intel.com/products/42807/Intel-Pentium-Processor-E6600-2M-Cache-3_06-GHz-1066-FSB? The Optiplex 780 should be able to support the Pentium while the ECS P4M900T-M2 (V1.0) definitely can't.

Since the CPU works in another system, the motherboard would be my first suspect. Personally I wouldn't bother replacing the motherboard just to get an old and slow E6600 working, but you could try a different PSU to make sure the low quality unit that you use isn't the issue.

Hi,

I didn't change the PSU, but the computer is able to boot now with the new processor after I changed my RAM from Kingston kvr800d2n6/2g (2 pieces) to Samsung 1gb 2rx8pc2-4200u-444-12-e3 (1 piece). And It will still working with Samsung 1gb 2rx8pc2-4200u-444-12-e3 (1 piece) + Kingston kvr800d2n6/2g (1 piece) though.

Any idea why it's working after I use Samsung 1gb 2rx8pc2-4200u-444-12-e3 RAM?

Also, another new question: With the new processor, why my computer has no display if I use Sapphire Radeon R7 250 2G GDDR3 PCI-E WITH BOOST, as the GPU? I don't think it's PSU problem since my computer working fine with Nvidia Gefoce 8600GTS 256MB while this GPU has a higher power consumption than the sapphire.
