Computer HDMI output uses

I have always used a DVI connection to transfer video from the CPU to a monitor.

Can an HDMI cable be used to do the same thing? I am thinking about buying a computer which does not have a DVI connector, but both the computer and the monitor have HDMI connectors.

Are you consider 4k or a 144hz, if no then it will be fine. If yes you may be better off with a display port cable

HDMI is a digital connection that can also transmit audio if your monitor has speakers.
You will find that the HDMI connectors are also easier to plug in.
