Computer keeps freezing, please help.

Specs -

AMD FX6300
8GB 800MHz DDR3 memory
GTX 1070
EVGA 650W Bronze+ PSU
MSI 970 Motherboard
Windows 10

It started around 2 months ago, I'm not too sure what started it (before anyone asks my hardware has been the same for around 4 months so it's nothing to do with a recent hardware change). I noticed there was a recent update for Windows, it could have something to do with this but I am not sure. Can anyone recommend any tools that I can use to diagnose the problem? Or if anyone has had any problems with Windows 10 and it's newest update let me know.

It tends to not freeze if I have a game open (I usually keep Dark Souls 2 open).

Any suggestions to fixes is welcomed greatly.

Can you play the game? My suggestion would be: Don't have the game open if you dont play it.

Maybe an energy setting in windows that can be changed will help like setting the hdd to never go asleep under the advanced energy settings in windows.

I'd suggest backing up your files and resetting the HDD.
Plan B: Reset using a program, or reset your settings.
Plan C: Get a new HDD and windows.
