My old pc had an amd processor, with 8gb ram (2x4gb), a cooler master v550, gtx 660 ti, and some old hdd. This build was fine, just a bit slow, and due an upgrade.
My friend passed down his old motherboard (an asrock z77 extreme 4) which was used fr around a couple of months from new. and so i just needed a CPU, and i would be using the RAM, GPU and PSU from the old build, along with a new ssd (850 evo).
I bought the used cpu for £40, an i3 3240. So i got to building the new computer, it first posted fine, after i put everything together. i then carried on installing windows, without a problem. Once it was set up, i started installing updates and my software.
Where i noticed that every now and then my mouse would be laggy and choppy. (the mouse also gave me no problem and i checked if it did the same on my laptop but it was fine). It only went when i restarted the PC. But it would do it again after a while. I also checked task manager and every time it was choppy the usage was normal, so the CPU wasn't really under any load.
It then decided to stop, and i finished installing software and updates. restarted it and it was all smooth. i ran cinebench, where it bench marked and put my CPU under 100% load. and it never lagged once. i noticed the temperature of the CPU would jump up and down 5 degrees every second.
Later i was just watching a video, went away and came back to it completely frozen. I shut it down by the button. and when it came to turning it on, it booted up, went off then came on by itself. then booted into the post screen showing specs. After i got through to the bios, it loaded up windows fine.
So i got into contact with the seller and returned the CPU.
Is this lag from the CPU? or could the motherboard also be a factor?
How would i know if the motherboard is actually faulty? Because everything installed fine, just the lag and the weird restart, turn off and turn on.
