I purchased a computer monitor a few weeks ago as an external secondary monitor for my laptop, it's currently connected via HDMI so I can play audio through the built in speakers, it works just fine and sounds perfect until I start playing a game. after a few minutes of gaming the audio will start crackling and sound like it's 'lagging' such as when a vhs tape is crinkled and the audio gargles. it will continue to do this until the sound just stops completely. while it does this it also drops the games FPS and makes it choppy. this is not an issue with my computer being able to handle the game! if I disable the built in speakers and play it through an external speaker, everything works find and dandy with no issues no matter how long I play. I've checked all of my audio and video drives and updated them all to no avail. any thoughts? the monitor is a MX279

HDMI audio runs off your video card, not through your sound card, usually giving the user a 1%-3% hit in performance.

it's possible your gpu is just barely able to run the game, and the 3% hit in performance from the hdmi audio is a little too much to deal with.

that or you have an intel and you're using intel hd graphics... in which case it's very possibly a drive issue. as intel hd graphics might bench well but the drivers are absolutely junk.

thanks for that! that makes sense, but I doubt its an issue with performance but I will look into it tonight, even with a 5% hit I should still be getting good performance, the card is a geforce GTX 870m 6gb and doesn't struggle with nearly anything.

as for the Intel hd graphics/ driver issue, I am using the Geforce GTX card as an output for the external monitor, and using the built in intel hd graphics card to run the laptop screen (http://i.imgur.com/wbL91vh.png) could this cause an issue? I would try switching but I can't figure out how to or if it's even possible. if it is a driver issue, anytips on fixing it? I have the latest drivers installed.

Hey,

*You have "NVidia Optimus" which only uses one GPU at a time. It uses the Intel in basic usage then switches over to the NVidia GPU. Since this is a laptop the audio source would be the main Realtek audio chip AFAIK.

I'm not certain though since I don't have access to such a laptop so it's possible that it is switching to the NVidia GPU to provide audio and there's a problem there which only happens when you play a game because that's when the software automatically switches from the Intel to NVidia chips.

So:
1) Not the monitor since it works when not gaming

2) Not the onboard Realtek chip since it works when not gaming

3) POSSIBLY an issue with the NVidia GPU audio only happening when switching to it.

Unfortunately I'm not quite sure of a solution right now.

Update:

1) Does audio work properly on the laptop itself when gaming?

2) Does audio work if you disable the laptop screen and ONLY use the desktop monitor?

As for #2, it should have the Intel GPU being used for the desktop monitor now (I think) then auto switch to the NVidia chip when gaming. Anyway, this may help troubleshoot things.

Other:
I noticed the screenshot that makes it appear the Intel GPU is used for the desktop and NVidia one for monitor. I didn't think both GPU's could run at the same time so I'm not quite sure what's going on there.
