CPU: Intel I7 4590k
GPU: MSI Geforce 970
Motherboard: ASUS Maximus 7 Ranger
PSU: XFX 750w Gold
RAM: 8gb (2 x 4gb) Corsair Vengeance
OS: Windows 10 Home.
Cooling: 6 x Dead Silence fans + Corsair H50i Closed loop water cooler.

The build is probably about 4 years old.

Hey folks: I've been browsing the internet for a couple of hours now and found a few similar problems, but nothing that has really helped me so far. Last night my computer was working fine: I shut it down and went to sleep. Twelve hours later when I tried to load it up again however: nothing. No fans, no display and no sound. My first response was to check I had it switched on at the socket.

So, the power button on the case does nothing. Neither does the power button directly on the motherboard - pressing the button gets no response at all. I do know that some power is getting to the motherboard however, as said power button in lit up and several other lighting elements are working.

I have tried removing my GPU, RAM, Hard drives and even case fans in order but with no real difference. On a couple of occasions the computer DID start up for 2-3 seconds, however the motherboard simply shows a rapid series of codes on its LED display before powering off again. After this happens, trying to turn it on again results in the same 'nothing' as before. What's more, there doesn't seem to be any one thing I can do to trigger this - the last time it happened was after I had reassembled all the parts and left it powered off for ten minutes or so, but leaving it without power now does nothing.

I have even tried removing the Motherboards bettery for five minutes to see if that helped reset anything.

Looking at people with similar issues online, I suspect that this is caused by either my power supply of my motherboard. Unfortunately, I don't have a spare power supply or test computer to had to diagnose this properly, and I can't afford to just go buying replacement parts without being certain they will help.

So I turn to you: mighty internet! Uh, does anyone have a clue how to solve this?

Solution
First of all, thanks for the link - really useful and I'll be keeping a copy of that image.

Okay: update time!

Today I had a quick hunt around the house for a paperclip and couldn't find one. For some reason I have nothing useful on hand these days.

Out of curiosity I wired up my power supply again and hit the power switch - and it worked. Sort of.

The machine is now powering up, not doesn't seem to be giving out any signals or power to my connected devices. The mouse and keyboard aren't getting anything and the monitor just says 'no signal' whenever I change the port it's plugged into.

Will keep experimenting (and trying to locate a paperclip) but the meantime, does this give anyone any ideas?

Update
________________

So, I got the display working (I had apparently not connected my RAM properly during reassembly and go to the BIOS and everything!

Sadly, the machine won't boot due to a CPU fan error (most likely due to the fact that I have my fans plugged I to the wrong mobo slot).

So I plugged them into the mobo 'cpu fan' slot where they should be, powered up aaaand... dead again.

It WAS booting reliably to bios before this, but switching the wires back hasn't helped. Still dead now.

Yet another update
---------------------

So, I managed to solve the fan error and get the machine booting to bios but no further. Turns out that was user error as (I think) I somehow managed to unplug the power supply to my boot drive!

Annoying, turning the machine off again to couple up the power has killed it again. Can't turn it on to find out if this will fix the booting issue.

Updateo
----------------

So uh, I fixed it. Somehow.

After making sure everything was wired up properly I disconnected the power completely for three hours or so, flicked it on and it started to boot. Now that my CPU was was wired properly and my boot drive had power, it booted to windows just fine.

I'd like it elaborate that this wasn't what fixed it - the drive was fine beforehand and the incorrect wire was still functioning fine. I've no idea what actually caused this Inthe firstly place.

But, it booted to windows. I forgot to plug in for of my two ram sticks so I'm currently running on 4gb and I'm certain that when I shut it down to plug in the other this whole thing will start again, but I guess I'll burn that bridge when I get to it.
