Hi, I'm running an Abit AV8 mobo with an AMD 64, FX 5900 Ultra, 1 GB
dual channel ram. Recently, my computer began to only power up for a
few seconds, then it would turn off once i heard the hd start to
spin. So I pulled the 550 watt PS, and i bought another 500 watt. Now
what happens is the little display on the mobo still lights up, but
the cpu fan doesnt spin as it did before. I'd appreciate any help.
TIA

Is your CPU fan faulty? If it's not spinning your CPU might be overheating.

I thought these 'new' boards had advanced LED read out for boot problem
diagnosis?

You should remove everything connected to the
motherboard. The only items that should be installed is
the CPU, the RAM, the keyboard, the speaker and a video card.
That is it - nothing more. If you happen to have plugged something in
backwards then the motherboard may not work properly. Once you get
video, plug in ONE hard drive and ONE floppy and make sure that they
work. Then, you should add one item at a time making sure that
everything else still works.

If that doesn't help, then the motherboard is the most
likely suspect.

Try changing the CPU fan. It could be that the speed sensor on the fan has
failed and as the board can't detect the fan going round, shuts it down to
protect the CPU.
What brand is this 500w PSU you,'ve installed?
