Computer not recognizing headphones

My headphones are not being recognized by my computer. They are plugged into the front panel, and yes, my headers are verified connected. In device manager, Under Audio Inputs and outputs the only two are Realtek Digital Output and Speakers. Under sound, video, game controllers there is NVIDIA High Def Audio, NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device, Realtek High Def Audio, and XSplit Stream Audio Renderer.

Try Realtek control panel, it should show rear panel and front panel ports and options to switch from one to the other.

Check realtek sound icon in systray by windows clock,if not there type realtek in start search box or look in program files folder for realtek entry. What motherboard model your computer has?

I am currently using an MSI b150m mortar. I found the files but cant open the control panel for some reason

type in windows search box/cortana Realtek HD audio manager, it should launch realtek control panel, or look for in control panel ( complete or classic view of control panel)

I installed my audio driver from realtek. I will do that now.

to be clear, i update realtek with the msi driver, am I correct?

Yes, it won't harm. But if you already found the files of Realtek HD Audio manager, you should be able (without update) to launch it from windows manager.

Update: The Audio Manager now detects my hardware, yet, it doesn't play sound.

Your front panel is supposed to be in HD mode ( your case front panel audio is supposed to be connected to motherboard front panel audio header through it's HD wiring not the AC97), so no need to switch anything in realtek HD panel.
