Earlier today I accidentally tried to plug in a USB cable upside down. I didn't use any force, the USB cable just touched the USB port on my motherboard and then the computer shut down. If I try to start the computer, all the lights and fans turn on for a fraction of a second, and then everything turns off. I have a very cramped case with terrible cable management, so I don't want to unplug everything. Any ideas of what I should try to do first?

P.S. After I try to turn on the computer and the lights come on for a fraction of a second, pressing the power button again doesn't do anything. The only way to have the lights come on again is to completely unplug the computer from the wall then plug it back in. Simply turning the PSU off then on doesn't seem to work. Does this mean it is a PSU failure?

Ws it one of the front port or rear ports? if its the front port, try just unplugging the front USB header.

If it's the rear, look and see if anything is bent and touching. That's usually what happens, the shielding inside gets bent, grounds out, PC won't turn on.

It was a rear usb port. I just checked and it doesn't seem that any of the metal shield tab thingies are touching the ports. What are those metal tabs even supposed to do in the first place? It seems to me that all they do is get in the way of everything and cut your finger when you try to build a computer.

I took out the power supply and tested the volts. Everything was fine. I then removed the motherboard and set it up on top of it's box. I plugged everything in and the computer worked. Something in the case must have been not plugged in or was shorting the board. I plan on buying a new case, as the old one was waaaay to cramped and had no room for upgrades.
