i have a intel P4 2.8 ghz dual core few days back a burnt smell was coming , now the com is not starting whats the problem is it the power unit , previously the display used to show check signal cable

check your power supply.
next check your heat sink for mass amounts of dust and other junk cluttering the fins. if your fins are full, your cpu may very well be fried.
if you have a graphics card, check that by taking it out and using on board video if available.
your thermal paste may have hardened up and fallen off or crumbeled away, this would cause your cpu to run very hot.
the good news is, you now have a reason to upgrade from a dual core 😀
