Computer only shuts down when I try to restart it

I recently built a new computer but seem to have a strange problem. When I hit the restart button, or click restart, the computer will only shut down. Even after waiting for a couple minutes, it will not restart.

I'm using a

Asus P9x79 pro motherboard
Intel Core i7-4820k processor (LGA2011)
running Windows Server 2012

Because the original motherboard bios did not support the processor, I updated the bios using the USB flashback method (I got the bios from the asus website). It runs and is fine except the inability for it to restart. To clarify, the power off/on button works, however when I hit restart or select restart, the computer will only shut down.

Let me know if I'm missing any relevant details. I did not seem to find an answer to this when I searched the forums.

That's interesting. Are you sure you have the reset header plugged into the right slot? I don't see is as a huge problem. It's probably just your motherboard being faulty in that aspect but that wouldn't really bother me because you ca always reboot your computer from within windows.

I see it as a pretty big problem, I use my Reset switch a lot when I have a system lock or freeze. I like to overclock a lot and sometimes I need to reset/reboot my computer and so I find it very important for it to be working.

What are you talking about?? I've never had to use my Reset switch. I'm also a big overclocker but when i get a BSOD it restarts automatically and so I've never had to manually do it. I also never have system locks or freezes. What are your computer specs? It might be because you have a bad computer.

I don't know man, That's a pretty crappy rig you got there. The i5 is way more powerful then your weak 6300. and you have a pretty low end graphics card.

Why don't you shut your stupid little mouth. Some of us cant afford a really nice high end computer like you. Yeah I thought that might have been the issue so I looked at the connection from the case reset button to the motherboard. Is that what you are talking about? Anyway, even when I click reset in the OS, the computer will turn off then fail to turn on.

In reference to the other comment, while you can get away without having to ever use reset, I'm just hoping it's not a symptom of a larger problem which is why I'd like to figure it out.

It sounds like its your motherboard having the problem. I would suggest updating to the latest bios if you haven't already and if that doesn't work then try resetting all you settings and if that doesn't work then try resetting the CMOS. Do you notice any other things weird or wrong with your computer? I don't see how this could affect anything else but you never know.

I had already updated to the latest BIOS so I went ahead and reset the CMOS. There weren't any other things wrong/weird with the computer that I noticed. Anyhow, after the CMOS reset, I'm able to restart the computer from the OS, however the actual reset button on the case still does not work.

Check that not only is it plugged into the mobo Front Panel Header but that it's oreiented correctly, Hot to Hot, and Ground to Ground - may be as simply as reversing the plug in the FP header
