Question Computer only runs for a split second ?

Hi,

My computer only starts for a split second, spinning the cpu fan and lighting up the Saphire logo on the graphics card, the front fans jolt forward a tiny bit, the PSU fan spins and rear fan jolts foward a bit, all in like 0.5 seconds and then nothing, wont start. I can press the power button again after a waiting a few seconds and it will do what I described again. I have done EVERYTHING to check this and it is driving me crazy.

Things I tried
  • I have taken the CMOS battery out for a few mins and put back in, I have also changed it, nothing.
  • I got a new PSU, new motherboard, new ram, new cpu, nothing,
  • Switched graphics cards, still having exact same problem.
  • Shorted the header pins to jump start, nothing.
  • Taken everything out to inspect for metal debris and nothing.
  • Started it without fans connected, same problem.

All wires are securely seated in their respective positions. All components are connected properly. No dust buildup, new thermal paste on cpu. What is the problem????!!!! It's driving me crazy.

It's a ozc mod stream 600w PSU, I7 4790T cpu, Asus q87m-e motherboard, 32gb Samsung ram, sapphire rx580 8gb gpu, 1 ide drive and 2 ssd drives.

Hope somebody can help.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

It's a ozc mod stream 600w PSU
That is a bad unit. Source(borrow, not buy) a reliably built 650W unit and see if the issue persists.

I got a new PSU
How did you get a new OCZ PSU?

I7 4790T cpu, Asus q87m-e motherboard
You have an iGPU on the processor, does the system show any signs of life when you've removed the discrete GPU from the system? Try with one stick of ram.

32gb Samsung ram
Might want to pass on a link to the ram you're working with or images of the rams.

1 ide drive
How do you have this tethered to your motherboard? The board you have lacks an IDE connector.

I got the PSU second hand, it's working fine, it works in another computer.

Sorry it's not ide, it's SATA. My bad.

I will try your other suggestions, thanks.

Is your other computer the same specs to yours? If not, that doesn't help rule out anything.
No it's not the same specs.

I should be clear. I originally started with a CiT FX PRO 700w power supply, Mushkin Silverline ram 16gb, and the rx580 Gpu. The CPU was I5 2500K all in a Intel DQ67SW motherboard. That's when this problem started.

I thought it must be the motherboard, 1 ram slot was faulty, so that's when I got the specs posted in my original post.

Then I changed the PSU (to the OCZ one) as it still suffered the same problem, but to no avail.

To me it's strange that two completely different systems suffered exactly the same issue. It can't be the graphics card because I swapped it out for an old Powercolour one (working) and it STILL suffered from the split second starting problem. I am just at a loss.

Are there any extra stand-offs/mounts under the motherboard that do not line up with the motherboard holes?

Also, you should inspect the rear panel ports to make sure nothing is sticking into any of them that isn't supposed to be there, like the little grounding fingers found on some ATX I/O panels.

Hey, I checked under the board, there are only risers where the screw holes are. I also checked the rear panel, everything is fine.

This afternoon, I got the old specs motherboard hooked up to the CiT power supply, with 1 stick of mushkin using on board graphics, still split second then off.

I tried 1 stick of the Samsung ram in the new specs motherboard using the OCZ power supply and onboard graphics, still split second then off.

I strongly suspect the PSU. Testing by swapping a no name unit for a very old poor OCZ unit isn't a valid test. You need to beg, borrow, or buy a decent unit and try it.
