Computer Randomly Crashes

Ok so about a week ago I built a new PC and everything has been running beautifully. However last night my PC crashed, not like a BSOD, but more like as if you held the power button to force shut it down. It does it several times, sometimes before I can even logon to windows. An odd thing that I noticed is that normally after I shut down, the "clear cmos" light at the back is on, but after one of the crashes it turned off, and then after a few tries I was able to log on to windows, but as it was late at night I decided to shut down properly to possibly shed some light or help prevent whatever the problem was. My PC then crashed mid shut down (at least I'm 90% sure it did, as it shut down 5x faster than normal)

Specs:
MoBo: MSI z97 gaming 9 ack
cpu: i7 4790k
gpu: gtx 980 SC
ram: corsair vengeance 16gb (2x8) 2400mhz
psu: 860w corsair (platinum / 80plus)
hdd: 1 TB western digital
ssd: samsung 840 evo 250gb

So two questions:
1) What exactly is the clear cmos light and what does it mean when its on or off?
2) Any ideas as to why my PC is doing this and how to fix?

The Clear CMOS button is a quick way to do a bios reset for troubleshooting issues. It being on or off isn't really an indication of anything AFAIK; perhaps consulting your motherboards manual will shed some light on the matter.

As for the crashes, it could be many things; it's a shutdown, not a reboot right?
Pressing the Clear CMOS button would cause the computer to immediately reboot.

Well its odd, sometimes its a straight up shutdown, other times it reboots. And I haven't pressed the Clear COMOS, so its not a manual thing if thats what you tried implying

I implied no such tomfoolery!
Sadly the symptoms don't make it clear as to what could be causing this behaviour.
Can you recall any changes you made to the system prior to the start of the issue? Software? Updates?

It first happened when I launched Assassins Creed Unity with fraps, but all week I have been able to record Unity with fraps with no problems, so I doubt that is the issue. Other than that, I haven't installed any questionable software or anything like that.
