This is a rather lengthy and complex issue, and I'm at my wits' end trying to pinpoint the problem. This problem has been going on for well over a year (Dec 2015 to date).

I have contacted ASUS and Corsair support in regards to this issue as well because I cannot determine if this is a motherboard or PSU issue.

PSU: Corsair RM850 CP-9020056-NA
MB: ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0

My computer will randomly freeze, and it can be anywhere from once a day, once a week, to 10 times in an hour. It’s sporadic. When I say freeze, I mean everything stops, mouse/KB input does not work, all screens freeze, everything just stops. Windows does not crash or go to BSOD, it just sits there, stuck until I do a hard reboot.

This has been going on since I’ve had this computer (custom build – Dec 2015). Since then I’ve changed various parts via upgrading, which eliminates certain parts as a culprit.

Original build:
AMD FX-4350 @ 4.2GHz (Stock)

16.0GB Dual-Channel Corsair CMY16GX3M2A1600C9 DDR3 @ 800MHz (9-9-9-24)

Corsair RM850 PSU
Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

September 2016
GPU > changed GTX 960 to GTX 1070

January 2017
I have also upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 via a fresh install and format. All of my system drivers are up to date.

February 2017
CPU > changed FX-4350 to FX-9590
Mobo > changed ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 to Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 R5

The problem still persists, so I scanned the Windows files for errors, everything is fine. I ran a memory test, memory is fine. I ran a check disk on my OS SSD, no errors. That basically leaves MB or PSU. None of my hardware is overclocked, everything is set at the stock settings.

I can also note it’s not related to temperature or overheating, because before I installed my new processor and liquid cooler, the hottest my PC would get (under load) is 65C. Now, it stays below 40C.

After countless freezes over time, I reset my bios today to factory “optimized defaults.”

===============================================

I wrote all of the above about a week ago (around 2/14/17) and sent the tickets to Corsair and ASUS to assist me in troubleshooting. Neither one had a solution but offered an RMA for the product. I'm going to send the ASUS board back for RMA since I have a new board, and wait to see if the issue arises again before I contact Corsair for an RMA for the PSU.

I've checked Windows Event Viewer and there is nothing (that I can tell) related to a crash or stop. The computer will freeze regardless of idle or under load. It's also not related to specific program or HDD, because I've had freezes while running different programs from different drives, or even at idle like mentioned before.

Even with the new board it froze again today. I checked Windows events after and there was nothing.

Read the entire post though. That's the thing, it's not because of the 9000 series CPU.
