Solution

You need to update all the drivers your using not just the video card., chipset, SATA, audio, USB from the motherboards manufacture site.. If your using the latest driver for the 970 I would consider trying a older driver.
We´re you overclocking ? Because i had problem like this and i´ve done bad oveclock. I´ve had to add more voltage and it was alright ^^ Or by this way, if you tried auto OC or you have Inter Turbo, try to turn it off through bios, that can helps too !

no im not over clocking i just built my computer a few days ago, its not my first build, the specks are

Intel core i7 5870k
gts v8 cpu cooler
32gb of corsair ddr4
msi gaming 7 x99
gtx 970
Rm750i power supply from corsair

it was my first time installing a non stock cpu cooler, was wondering if too much thermal paste could cause it

i got all the drivers for my gtx 970, and used the disk that came with my msi gaming 7 mother board, what other drivers should i get and from where?

You just need to go to the Nvidia Experience on the bottom right side of the sidebar and there check for drivers, or if you don´t have Nvidia Experience on the sidebar then open start, type nvtray.exe and you should got little Nvidia logo in bottom tab on the right side, click on it by right click, and click on the Open NVIDIA GeForce Experience, open Driver selection and press Check for updates or something like this. If you don´t have even Nvidia Experience then go to the Start, type "run" into searching bar, press enter, in the run, type "devmgmt.msc", press enter, open "Display Adapters" and right click on your GPU name and Update drivers. Try it out, and about that paste, yes, there can be problem, if you used too much paste on cpu, it could spread to the contacts and causing bsod because you have to use only a little, like pea.
