Computer randomly shuts down

Hey all,

Weird problem on my wife's computer. It was randomly shutting down. Not like an abrupt shut down, but most of the time it just closes stuff out in windows and shuts down as if someone pressed the button. It was also giving the Windows 7 isn't valid message suddenly (even though it was). Figured it was malware, so I bought the Windows 8.1 upgrade, since the 7 key was on the old HP box and she uses a new case now.

Wiped the hard drives, installed Windows 8.1, still does it. For some reason when I unplugged her mouse/keyboard the length of time before shutdown really increased, but I think it was a fluke as I have them plugged back in and nothing has changed.

Thinking it might be the OS hard drive, I unplugged it, and installed the OS to the other drive. But still shuts down.

Could it be the Power Supply initiating a shut down? My experience with them is always an abrupt shut down, but perhaps it can be a smoother shutdown? Sometimes I get all the way into windows and am there for an hour. Other times, it'll shutdown booting up. It'll do it from BIOS, which tells me it's not the hard drives.

Any other culprits it could be? We have also seen USB drivers not being recognized, and one blue screen of death before the 8.1 install.

Really lost on this one, and any help is appreciated.

Will get those for you here shortly. One important thing to note, the computer has been running fine for over a year. No changes were made prior to what is happening now.

My computer did this before, and I asked my mom. She said that it might be going through some hardware issues. It did this a few more times, but then it hasn't done it in about 2.5 months. So I think the problem fixed itself. You might be dealing with the same thing. Just let the computer shut down a few more times. If it doesn't stop after several times, its probably something else that I may not even know about.
