Computer reset itself

My computer was turned off as normal and I wanted to go on it so I turned it on, logged in and bam. All of my files, saved pictures, taskbar all gone to factory reset. I don’t know why it did this. Could it be a virus? I’m in the middle of a system restore to restore it to how it was a couple days ago. This also means I loose ALL of my work from photoshop the past few days I’ve been working on. I’m confused and devastated. DO NOT want that to happen again so, how do I prevent it in the future?

Solution
This could happen just as easily if the Harddrive/SSD suddenly dies from any number of causes.

The only way to protect yourself is by being meticulous about backing it up. You want a backup that can be disconnected from the PC and power as well so that even a power surge can't damage it. Ideally you want two such devices so you can take one off-site to save your data in case something happens to your whole house such as fire. Mine is in my sisters basement across town.

Your files might still be there, did you search the drive for any of them?
