Computer restarts 1 Second after powering up. What's going on here?

Hey everyone, my desktop was running fine until a couple of hours ago. Transported it about 2km and it must have bounced around in the trunk going over some speed bumps. Now, I set everything up and hit the power button. Everything powers up, then after about 1 second shuts off. 2 more seconds go by, and the computer starts itself back up again. When it starts up, my mouse and keyboard don't power on, and I get no video signal either.

If I leave the pc off for a bit, it doesn't restart on startup, but I still get no video signal or power to any of my peripherals. I had a similar issue when transporting the pc before and I fixed it by wiggling the cpu heatsink, which leads me to believe that is where the issue lies. However, I have wiggled to my heart's content with no results. I am in dire need of help. Participating in LAN WAR II at UOIT, and I'm the only guy with a broken rig 🙁.

Here are my specs:

Inter Core 2 Quad Q6700
Coolermaster Hyper N520 CPU Cooler
4GB DDR2 RAM
Asus P5Q-E Mobo
ASUS Radeon HD 5770

I'll be sure to check all the psu cables as well. I'll update as soon as I do. I have to admit, I kind of buckled and raged after all the preparation for this event I did, to have something like this happen last minute. So, I went back home. Left everything set up the way it was and just left.

Might I also add, that I was dusting the case prior to transporting it. I took out the video card so I could get the can at a good angle to its heasink and fan. I also removed one of the fans on the CPU and reinstalled it after I finished cleaning the heatsink. However, I did a quick check after I was all done cleaning to make sure I didn't blow anything up while I was at it. I plugged the PSU in, hooked up the HDMI cable and hit the power button. The machine started up just fine, gave me a few expected errors like missing keyboard. I then powered it down before the windows loading screen popped up.

Also, might I ask why you don't think it's a CPU problem? Just curious if that is completely ruled out of the problem. Because I thought the restart may indicate CPU overheating?

I guess the CPU isnt completely ruled out. It might have a bad pin, or your mobo might have a bad socket that got fixed when you jiggled it..but that would be a big problem, and you'll have to take your cpu and look closely at it and the mobo to look for defects.

If its overheating it wouldnt do it immediately. It would get past POST and problem overheat at "starting windows". and if it did that most mobo's will display an error message before POSTing that says it had to shut down your system to prevent overheating.

Plus you also have a decent cpu cooler, so even if you did a terrible job putting on the thermal paste it shouldnt cause your cpu to overheat, unless you have doing a huge overclock, then it might happen.

Are you overclocked right now? have you tried setting everything back to stock speeds and booting like that?

Jiggling really should never solved any hardware issue.This does sound like an overheating issue. Do you see the fan spinning on the cpu cooler? Is there anything that might have moved in the way of any of the fans that is blocking it from moving freely?

Because you're not getting a POST beep, then it most likely isn't your ram or motherboard. Also because it boots up at least for a second I would say its probably not your power supply either. Cooling is my first choice as to the issue.

My second guess would be something on the motherboard, liek a cap that got bent.

Load into your BIOS instead of booting into windows and go to the hardware monitor tab or similar in your BIOS system and check all the temps there. If they are high or climbing quickly then you can blame your heatsink/thermal paste.

I got no signal to the screen so I couldn't really go into my BIOS and read info. The fans were spinning fine, and nothing has been overclocked. However, notice my use of the past tense. When I got back, I decided to take bavman's advice and reseat everything once more; unplug all psu connections plug them back in, and rule out as much hardware as possible. I decided to start with the RAM. Took it out completely started up the machine got some POST beeps. Threw one stick back in, and it booted up fine?! Thew in the second stick and rebooted with no issues. So I guess my RAM had absorbed some of the impact of the car ride and moved around a bit. It just needed to be reseated...for the 3rd time. Everything is fine now :bounce:
