Computer Restarts Or Exits Games

I dont know where I should Post this so I am Posting it here. I am having problems with my new system as when I am playing games such as UT 2004 and LOTR The Battle For Middle Earth my computer will just exit the game or sometimes at worst restart the whole computer. I had this trouble when I first bought it and posted it here and was told to upgrade my PSU and I have done that and it didnt fix the problem I also had a problem with my Heatsink as The plastic wasnt removed from the Bottom of it would have this affected the CPU as it was running around 50C. My current setup is as follows.

Motherboard: Gigabyte K8NSNXP-939
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 939
GFX Card: Leadtek Winfast 6600GT
Memory: 2x512Mb Kingmax DDR400
HDD: 2x200Gig WD Sata + 1X200Gig WD IDE
Soundcard: Soundblaster Audigy 2ZS
Heatsink: Coolermaster Hyper 6
PSU: Antec True Power 550W
Case: SUPER FLOWER 4 Series XION SILVER WINDOW
Fans: Vantec Stealth 1x120mm + 1x80mm
OS: XP Pro

Does anyone know what could be the problem as to why it is restarting or exiting games. I have updated all my drivers and it still didnt fix it. I have run out of Ideas as to why it is doin this. Any suggestions as to what could be the cause of this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Have you disabled the auto reboot function of Windows? The errors from the BSOD would be nice in diagnosing this issue.

I had the same problem with a 9800Pro. It just plain got too hot playing FarCry for long periods. It would just back out of the game. I solved that with a Zalman Heatpipe & fan. Yours could be heat related, but BSOD is probably memory or driver related in games. Run Memtest86 and check memory and see if temps could be a problem. When you upgraded drivers, did you use DriveCleaner first to clear out residue? Are you using Riva Tuner?

Try the usual suspects, make sure that AGP is your primary video in bios, and disable fast rights

I ran a memory test with memtest and it didn't find any faults and checked temp of My gfx card it runs around 50C when it is idling and goes up to 60C when I am playing games I am using rivatuner but I havent started to overclock yet as I am trying to get a stable base first. I disabled fast writess in rivatuner and so far it hasn't restarted or exited my games so hopefully it is working properly now.

Yeah I used one of those laser ones that you point and it reads the temp I am pretty sure that it is calibrated right and is giving the correct result.

Hmmm, I don't have any issues with "fast writes" but I heard from people that turning it off slowed them down considerably. Keep me posted.

This is how you do it in XP home edition.
1. Open System in Control Panel.
2. On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
3. Under System Failure, select the check box to: Write an event to the system log specifies that event information will be recorded in the system log.
4. Under Write Debugging Information, choose the type of information you want Windows to record when the system stops unexpectedly. Select either of these options.
a. Small Memory Dump records the smallest amount of information that will help identify the problem. This option requires a paging file of at least 2 MB on the boot volume of your computer and specifies that Windows will create a new file each time the system stops unexpectedly. A history of these files is stored in the directory listed under Small Dump Directory.
b. Kernel Memory Dump records only kernel memory, which speeds up the process of recording information in a log when the system stops unexpectedly. Depending on the amount of RAM in your computer, you must have 50 MB to 800 MB available for the paging file on the boot volume. The file is stored in the directory listed under Dump File.

For more information go to Windows Help and support - left click start and select Help and Support. When there you can search for "windows stops unexpectedly." This will give you a task instruction and an overview/article/tutorial option - look at these for more info.

Yeah i was playin LOTR today and it just exited the game, but when I was playin doom 3 it played fine no crashes or restarts. but it did restart when it was doin nothing I was checking settings in Excel and then it just restarted semms to do it whenever it wants to. my computer has 6 files in my minidump file but what do I use to open them to read them. I also have the option of complete memory dump as well as the other two which one should I choose.

Go with the small memory dump...if it doesn't give enough info, then we can kick it up a notch.

You can view it using Dr Watson. To open Dr. Watson, click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type drwtsn32.

Some dvd decoders use mpegport.sys that is not DEP compliant. Other programs UT2004 and <A HREF="http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t182.html" target="_new">nvidia drivers</A> conflict sometimes. The easiest fix it to edit your boot.ini in your root directory and set the flag /noexecute=AlwaysOff

Yes. But, DEP is IMHO more useless than useful. The best defense is a good firewall, fully patched system, and a virus checker. Would you take a drug that cures all ills, but has a side effect of incontinence?

It is already disabled and it now does it less often then before but I can't undersatnd why LOTR has a problem but Doom 3 doesn't.

Virus software is a scam. I haven't had virus software for the last 3 years. I download all kinds of good stuff ^^ and so far i'm fine. I guess you just have to be a smart downloader as well. Any hacker want to come in and steal my porn.. go ahead i got it for free ^^

I'm not suggesting this.. but a friend of mine had service pack 1 installed everything working great.. then microsoft although updates was turned off.. forced it on his computer. As soon as it loaded service pack 2 he started having weird problems with his programs and games. Including the restart issue your having. He ended up not finding anything to do about it.. reformated reinstalled all fresh new drivers.. still same thing. Swapped his video card and it took care of it. I guess a memory block on the card was defected.. and either way he recieved another 9800pro free from ATI after two letters of bitching.

I'm just showing how stupid this problem can really be. And unfortunately the suggested solution of PSU was a good guestimation, but i think we all know how computers are here. Trial and Error.

I have a laser and they are accurate. What all did you get temps on? If it is overheating, there are a number of places you need to get temp readings. The Northbrigde, The RAM Chips on the video card, the Southbridge"unlikely". How old is that PSU? Have you checked for compatibility issues with your MOBO and the RAM and/or the Video card? You can find a list on the MOBO manufactures website.
