I've recently had an overheating issue, computer would shut off completely. I have had this PC for a while now, maybe just over a year. This overheating issue happened a few times before I replaced the heatsink, fan and thermal paste with a better one.

Computer runs perfectly for regular tasks. It can run a game like minecraft without problems, but heavy duty games like BF4 stuff up the computer.

Within about 15 or 20 minutes, the screen goes black. Power, fans and monitor are still on but no signal is found. The keyboard is still on but pressing numlock or CAPS does NOT change the lighting indicators on the board.

Can be forced to shut down with power button and restarted instantly without a problem.

What I have done so far:
1) Done a clean with compressed air (not much dust due to replacing heatsink and cleaning the PC recently)
2) Run a stress test:
i) GPU stress test does nothing, goes to about 60C
ii) Running a CPU stress test, shuts down display like I've explained before and temp is <60C when it does this.

Specs:
Windows 7 Ultimate
AMD FX 8350 8-Core
GeForce GTX 970
16Gb RAM

Solution
try testing your psu, i had the same issues last year, turns out my psu was failing never could get it to crash during stress tests only when gaming
