Computer screen has odd horizontal lines, and then randomly continues to be functional

Hey guys, so I've had the same monitor for 3 years, and have recently been experiencing a problem. My monitor has been working fine for the most part, but suddenly displays odd horizontal pink/puple lines all over the screen, and sometimes goes to grey or white. The weirdest thing is that the monitor continues to work as if nothing has happened after a period usually taking an hour. I am sure that the cable is completely connected to the computer, and that the monitor has an appropriate link of electricity. I really appreciate any help that I get.

I had a asus monitor doing something similar but it turned white after being on for awhile, and had to keep it off (cool down) before it worked again. Possible the monitor is failing. But it could also be a cable issue, reseating both ends, or even replacing the cable might help.
