A friend of mine gave me a motherboard, CPU, graphic card and RAM memory from his old computer which was working perfectly before he bought a new one and gave me the mentioned components (listed below). After several months I have assembled the computer finally, got a working monitor and hard drive and was ready to set it up, but then I got the following problem.
When I start up my computer, all fans start working (CPU fan, PSU fan and GPU fan). Then after short time there is a BEEP, after which the CPU fan speeds up a lot. The screen then shows the very first menu with picture of Gigabyte and key-shortcuts for options for entering BIOS, booting etc. After that suddenly a new screen appears (without me pressing any key) with the following error message:
CMOS checksum error - defaults loaded
(something about safe mode entered...)
(something with CPU re-setting...)
which is on the (black) background, while on the foreground a menu appears:
"POST error occurs!"
-----------------------
Profile 1: Default
Success : Last Known Good
----------------
(key-shortcuts for menus...)
Then I don't even have the time to react when the computer shuts down by itself!
Note that information that I have written in the brackets in the first message is partial exactly because I don't have the time to read it, and I am still trying to record the screen with my phone camera before the PC shuts down.
It takes about 3-7 seconds after the BEEP for the computer to shut down. The moment it shuts down varies each time I try turning it on again.
Things I have tried so far:
I have searched various posts on the net, but whenever I find an info about the fix for CMOS checksum error, it DOES NOT involve computer shutting down by itself. On the other hand, there are posts about PC shutting down by itself suggesting that the PSU is bad.
I have assumed that the battery was drained, so I bought a new one but the problem persisted, so it is not the battery.
I have also replaced the thermal paste on both CPU and GPU and there were no changes.
I have also taken out all but one 1Gb RAM card and the problem persists.
I unplugged HDD - same.
I unplugged 4-pin CPU supply, and the PC stays on, but of course it's unusable.
Please help!
I have got the following configuration (there is NO compatibility issues because all these components have been used by my friend for years)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA M55S-S3 (rev 2.0)
http://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-M55S-S3-rev-20#sp
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 (not sure for an exact model, but definitely compatible with MB)
RAM: 3Gb Kingmax DDR2 667
Graphics Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 6790 1Gb DDR5
PSU: CHIEFTECH max 550W
UPDATE: On another try, I have pressed "Last Known Good" in the second menu and I wish I didn't. A strange BUZZING starts and doesn't stop, while it seems that the usual booting (tries) to take place but gets interrupted by the computer switching off again. Then I tired to turn it on again and after the beep, the buzzing again starts and I noticed that the CPU fan slows down and almost stops, then runs up again, and the computer switches off again. There is no error anymore though. Does this mean it is the PSU?
