So today I loaded up a game like I do every day and randomly my computer shuts down and I can smell a strong burning smell and would not turn back on.

So I go to take stuff out one by one to see what the problem is, I took out my GTX 970 and computer started again with no problems and is still running fine.

It is slightly overclocked and have ran this OC for a year with no problems.

What could have caused this? and will the fact that it was OC'd effect a warranty? even though it was fine for a year.

Could you give some more information? Mainly
-GTX 970's model (and by which company, like EVGA or MSI)
-What frequency were the memory and core running at, in Mhz?
-Did you raise the voltage?
-Did you ever monitor the temperature during intense gaming sessions? If yes, what was it like?

MSI Nvida GTX 970 Gaming Twin Frozr 5 Graphics Card
+ 200mhz core and + 300mhz memory
+ 30 volts
Din't monitor it recently but did it a lot first few months was always around 65-70 temperature at full load.

First off, any OC voids the warranty, as it decreases parts lifespan, even if you did it with MSI Afterburner. You might think it's dumb that using their own OC program voids the warranty, and I would agree. I would suggest that you added 30mV and not 30V 😛

Technically speaking, 200Mhz on the core isn't considered a ''slightly OC'd card'' and even 300Mhz on the memory isn't that small. 200Mhz on a base clock of 1170Mhz is nearly a 20% increase.

Looks like you fried something in it, either because the voltage was too high or it reached a temperature higher than it could withstand. I would still try and return the card and hope what fried doesn't give away that you OC'd it, but again, you technically voided the warranty.
