Hello,
My brother's laptop started shutting down after start up. I am trying to find out what is causing this and was wondering if there was anyone that could help me figure this out.

Start by posting the Computer Specs. There are different recovery procedures for different make/models.

Also, see if you can boot to Safe Mode.
Is there a Windows CD available ?
Can you burn a rescue disk on a working computer to boot from ?

I don't know about the guy that originally posted, but I am having the same problem. I have a Toshiba Satellite L305D. Got it at Walmart. I know. You get what you pay for, but that was what I could afford. Got it summer of 2009. Been working good until this morning I couldn't pick my user account. In fact, none of them worked. I shut her down and when I tried to start up again, it asked about safe mode. Ok, pick safe mode. Then it shuts down on its own, doesn't even give me the windows sign. I can't run any of the safe modes or the repair mode either. It will take me to the user account part if I choose to start windows normally, but again I can't log on. What is goin on?

You have Classic indicators of an infection that is preventing any attempt to fix the problem. Don't wait to 'pick safe mode' from a selection list presented to you, as that might be part of the infection (if, in fact there is an infection).
Tap the F8 key repeatedly after the 1st splash screen on startup. If that is disabled also, then refer to my original post Or the following:

Satellite L305D-S5893
See the section Hard Disk Drive Recovery using the recovery partition starting on p. 62 of the User's Guide.
