Hi there
Recently there was a power surge through my computer. This is not the first time it's happened so I replaced the PSU as I knew would fix the issue. From there, the old motherboard was also fried so I've replaced that.
When turning on the computer, it'll power up if the PSU, motherboard, processor and RAM are installed, as far as I can see (just looking in the case) it'll run happily like this. However adding either my graphics card, hard drive or disk drive causes the computer to shut down <1 second after initial power.
I have attached the parts outside the case (though was a shorting issue) it still happens. I've checked the processor for dust/contamination/broken pins, there is nothing. The new PSU is 600MW which less than the 650MW of the old one, but the PC needs <500MW so power should not be the issue. I've tested the new PSU and it's working fine. The one thing I've not done is re-apply thermal paste to the CPU, however given that the shutdown is <1 second I think it's safe to say temperature rise is not the issue here.
Might be important to note, I've had a power surge before that blew out a previous PSU. I replaced it with the exact same one however this time I've changed it up (seemed un-reliable since I blew 2 in <1 year through normal use). I have NOT overclocked anything or messed with any internal settings/bios, though I believe the videocard came overclocked out of the box. However that's never been an issue.
This also happened as I turned on the PC for the first time that day, not a freak out in the middle of a gaming session. Additionally when it did that the house fuses tripped. When it fails to power on now it does not trip the fuses.
I'm at a complete loss. Are all three parts also dead? Or is the processor doing something weird? Or is it something else entirely?
