Computer Shuts Down When USB device inserted in rear USB ports

Hello All,

I'm having an issue with my signature rig where the computer will completely shut down when I insert anything (mouse, kboard, usb drive) into any of the rear usb ports. After it shuts down I have to reset the bios to get it to boot. The front-side usb ports work without issue. So far I have unplugged and re-plugged most major things, this didn't help the situation. Am I dealing with a faulty usb controller? (it worked without issue until a few days ago). Suggestions before I pull the trigger on a new 1155 mobo?

I have a GA-Z77X-UD5H-WB mobo with a 3570k/Antec 900w HCG PSU.

AFAIK they are but I will double check when I get home. the rig won't even get to a post screen the usb port is touched with anything once the computer is powered on.

There is no usb 2.0 drivers to install.

If ANY device plugged into the rear usb ports causes it to power off then you have a bad motherboard.

It MIGHT only be isolated to the rear usb ports, but there might be other shorts/issues on the board, or might have more develop in the future.
Do you have the board properly installed on standoffs with all of the screwed in?

Yeah I am using standoffs + it's well screwed in. No other ports exhibit the same behavior (shutdown and need to clear cmos). I was thinking its a bad board but wanted to get a few more opinions before buying a replacement.

"If ANY device plugged into the rear usb ports causes it to power off then you have a bad motherboard."

yes ^^ this is exactly what is happening.

That's weird Josh. There are 8 ports controlled by Z77 and 8 controlled by VIA hub(s) (front/rear x2 controllers). Always thought modern USB ports had separate fuses per pair... I can see "pairs" not working but the entire rear panel USB? NO.

I'd check the PSU and for good sake, re-flash the bios.
