I have just built a brand new pc (NOTE: This was my first time building one). My computer is very slow on opening simple apps and games (i.e Chrome, Word, GTA 5). When running games, the gameplay is flawless, but when using simple apps they are slow.

Here is my build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/KDxJcf

P.S. I know i went over the top on the power supply.

One don't defrag ssd's its not needed unlike hard drives with platters.
Two even though most would run their games and minimal apps and programs from ssd's.
I wouldn't recommend it, no matter how speedy and "EPIC" it is suppose to be.
I suggest you move your os to your seagate and keep your apps on it, the ssd keep your games there.
When you open microsoft word, exactly how long does it take to open up ?
When I open microsoft word 2007 on my W10 machine, it takes 5-15 seconds.
Also if I...
Let me ask you something between your hard drive "seagate" and your ssd "crucial"
Where do you store your os and applications ?
Also do you defrag at night and cleanup any windows debris left by chrome, word, adobe or anything else like that ?

I would use ccleaner once a week "7 days", also for your ssd, keep windows on it and put the games on it.
For your seagate, keep your mostly used apps on there, also split the hdd into 2 partitions.
One for your apps only, the other for data/backups, for your psu, yeah its abit too much.

5 year warrenty and it would be more than enough for your computer system, unless you add another 970 you will need 700watts total.

I store my OS on my ssd (although some games as well). Some of my files are on my SATA. I have only defragged once and I wouldn't know how to clean up
"debris". I do have CCleaner, and i use it about twice every few weeks.

I hope this helps.

EDIT: I check my Task Manager and my 2TB Drive has very low usage and my ssd has 95-100% usage. This may because my OS is on it, but this might be why it is slow.

Also if I open up chrome about the same time frame as well.
Use this program and run a deepscan, once its done, it should give you a better idea of what might be the issue.

Don't worry about this app, been using it since 2008 and it gives me no grief.

Right now I'm defragging my hard drive. Currently I'm not looking to spend anything more than $10 (i did see a free version. Will that work too?). As for opening times, within 10 mins of startup it can take word and chrome 30s to 1m, but after the computer has been on for a while they start close to instantly.

The trial will do for the moment, however I suggest getting the full version as that one has its limitations.
The software you can get is for 20.00 free shipping, however you can get it lower than that after the holidays.

If you use windows defragmenter, checkdisk and ccleaner weekly it'll keep it stable.
The system mechanic will do it automatically and the programmers are updating it for windows 10.
I know your on 8.1 but I suggest you move up to 10 as things will be much more stable and less of a problem.
